Job Overview

This is structure and craft work in supervising the electrical maintenance program and/or electronic systems of a correctional facility. The work includes planning, assigning, and supervising the work of a Correctional Electrician II, maintaining and repairing electrical equipment and electronic systems, and instructing and monitoring Licensed Electrical Helpers. The role focuses on planning, directing, and supervising others and developing an electrical maintenance program.

  • Plans, directs, and oversees installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems to ensure safe compliance with electrical code.
  • Directs and inspects installation and maintenance of light and power circuits to ensure proper functioning.
  • Plans, directs, monitors, inspects, and participates in wiring of state-owned buildings during construction or remodeling to ensure code compliance.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of materials and equipment to keep adequate supplies.
  • Plans jobs for proper repair, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems.
  • Records procedures to maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Inspects electrical systems, projects, equipment, and buildings to ensure safe and proper functioning.
  • Monitors and controls residents’ behavior to accomplish assigned tasks and maintain institutional security.
  • Supervises and instructs residents to work on electrical projects safely and correctly.
  • Implements and complies with human resource laws, policies, procedures, and practices.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of State and National Electrical Code.
  • Knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and practices of the electrical and electronic trade.
  • Knowledge of principles and theory of electricity.
  • Knowledge of basic electronic theory and principles.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the electrical trade.
  • Knowledge of environmental operating parameters and security systems of the buildings.
  • Knowledge of authorized building access rules and procedures.
  • Knowledge of fiber optics and cables used for communication.
  • Ability to supervise subordinate personnel.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve complex technical integrated electronic and security system problems.
  • Ability to conduct research on technical systems and make recommendations to management.
  • Ability to schedule installation of devices for new or existing security system components.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and evaluate work of others.
  • Ability to interpret sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
  • Ability to keep records and files.
  • Ability to estimate materials required for a job.
  • Ability to detect and repair defects in electrical and electronic systems and equipment.
  • Ability to use and care for tools and equipment used in the trade.
  • Ability to use applicable computer programs.
Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and a current valid Master Electrician’s license issued by the Electrician’s Examining Board and two (2) years’ experience at the Master level. Must have at least one (1) year of experience working in the field of electronics.

Licensing / Registration / Certification Requirements

Maine Master Electrician’s license issued by the Electrician’s Examining Board.
