Position: Junior Associate Scientist (Chemist)

Position

Associate Scientist (Chemist) – This role supports environmental consulting for Federal, State, Local, and Commercial/Industrial clients by providing accurate scientific data, operating mobile field instruments, assisting with method development, calibration, and maintenance. The position may also be on call for emergency response projects as needed.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree (BS preferred) in chemistry, environmental science, or a closely related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • 2–4 years of experience in environmental field work and/or an analytical laboratory environment.
  • Working knowledge of environmental laboratory deliverables and data workflows (e.g., EDDs, lab reports, validation summaries) and ability to support analytical data review.
  • Strong attention to detail; data management and interpretation skills; able to manage complex tracking spreadsheets.
  • Strong interpersonal, written/verbal communication, organizational, analytical, and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; adaptable and able to work in non-standard environments.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
Core Responsibilities
  • Support QA/QC and data validation activities using either the National Functional Guidelines or the DoD Data Validation Modules, including sequencing reviews, tracking validation progress, and performing quality checks for technical evaluation and reporting.
  • Manage and maintain project environmental data trackers and complex spreadsheets; track laboratory deliverables and milestones (e.g., lab reports, EDDs, DVRs, SDGs) through final data readiness for reporting.
  • Coordinate with project managers, analysts, and laboratories to confirm sample documentation, resolve discrepancies (analytes, holding times, formatting), and communicate data/validation status.
  • Prepare, review, and update technical documentation and plans (e.g., QAPP tables, analytical methods, standard operating guidance/procedures); ensure consistency between source files (Excel) and finalized deliverables (PDF).
  • Analyze and interpret analytical data; select appropriate methods and approaches when standard procedures are inadequate.
  • Support environmental sampling programs (soil, groundwater, vapor intrusion (VI), PFAS, VOC, and multi-media events) as needed, including fieldwork and occasional travel.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain field/mobile analytical and monitoring equipment; interpret instruments and sampling results.
  • Document field activities and prepare daily/final reports within established budgets and schedules.
Preferred Skills
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork throughout the U.S. and carry up to 50 lbs. of field gear in challenging conditions (including extreme weather).
  • Experience maintaining and calibrating laboratory instrumentation (e.g., GC and GC/MS) and using EPA/other analytical methods, best laboratory practices, and QA/QC procedures.
  • Proficiency with common field instrumentation (e.g., PID/FID, multi‑gas meters), including calibration, deployment, and interpretation of results.
  • Familiarity with QAPP development/maintenance and supporting federal environmental investigation projects.
  • Experience writing technical documents such as standard operating guidance/procedures and supporting multi‑event sampling programs.
  • OSHA 40‑HR HAZWOPER certification (desirable, not required).

Compensation

Salary Range: $49,347 - $64,821 - $80,190
