Job Title

District Police, Dispatcher

Summary

Under general supervision, receives emergency and non-emergency calls for police service, dispatches patrol officers to calls for service, enters accurate and concise data into the Computer Aided Dispatch System, and coordinates with external emergency services when needed.

Responsibilities
  • Dispatch patrol officers to situations requiring police response.
  • Answer telephone calls made to emergency and non-emergency lines to determine required agency response.
  • Communicate with officers via radio.
  • Assist in maintaining 24/7 communications operations.
  • Enter, obtain, and relay information from the Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System.
  • Monitor fire and security alarms and video surveillance for all campuses.
  • Enter data and citations, maintain logs, and file incident reports.
  • Assist Police Chief, supervisors, officers, and other agencies via computer or telephone.
  • Assist in emergency phone and panic alarm testing.
  • Enter maintenance and technical support work orders; pick up, sort, and distribute department mail.

Technology Skills
  • Use of spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software.
  • Operating various computer systems including Computer Aided Dispatch, Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System, Genetec‑Security Desk System, Cisco Emergency Responder, Keltron Fire Alarm Monitoring System.
  • Operating a multi‑channel trunked radio system covering multiple counties and a police radio system in accordance with FCC rules.
Required Experience

No work experience is required.

Preferred Experience

At least one year of experience in public safety dispatch telecommunications or equivalent work experience and training that provides the required knowledge and skills.

Education

High school diploma or educational equivalent.

Preferred Education

Hold a Telecommunications Operator License issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

Special Requirements
  • Either already hold a Telecommunications Operator License or must meet the temporary licensing requirements and obtain the license within the first year of employment.
  • Must satisfactorily complete other required Department of Public Safety training and coursework within six months of employment.
  • Must successfully pass a 12‑week Communications Training Program.
  • Must complete 20 hours of training every 2‑year unit as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
  • Must complete TDD/TTY training every 6 months.
  • Must be willing to work any of the three shifts covering 24hours a day, seven days a week, with shifts subject to change on short notice and availability for recall in emergency situations.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal background check, drug screen, and psychological and physical examinations prior to employment.
  • Past supervisors may be contacted for reference.
Physical Requirements

Work performed in a standard office environment; may involve standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, vision, hearing, and use of a headset and foot controls. Frequent repetitive motion, such as typing, data entry, and extended monitoring of screens. Occasional lifting of objects up to 10 pounds.

Compensation

Salary Range (PG 121): $57,773–$72,216
