The Internal Communications Specialist is responsible for operationalizing the strategic plan, coordination, and implementation of internal communication activities across various functional areas at Ciena. This person works to execute comprehensive communications programs, inclusive of content development and editing, channel identification, distribution and analysis.

General Activities

* Identify opportunities to enhance leadership visibility, celebrate successes, promote understanding of various functions, company priorities, and communicate other critical information and calls to action across the organization
* Manage communications going into and originating from functional organizations, including building and maintaining a communications/editorial calendar and development of associated content (e.g., articles, email messages, scripts for videos, etc.)
* Collaborate and align with others in the Corporate Communications and Internal Communications teams to ensure message alignment to corporate narrative and coordinate timing with other company-wide or functional communications
* Provide guidance to functional leaders and program/content owners regarding internal communications policies/procedures, style and tone of messaging, content development/editing, approval requirements, timing considerations, cultural/regional nuances, etc.
* Determine and establish communications vehicles (newsletters, intranet postings, e-mail, and other channels, etc.), including analysis of existing channels and exploration of new ways of engaging with audiences and delivering information
* Support Internal Communications team with corporate-level campaigns and communications activities, as appropriate

Specific Responsibilities

Communications tasks include but are not limited to:

* Functional & Executive Communications
* Build comprehensive quarterly and/or annual communications plans for various functional organizations
* Draft/edit content for executive voice, tone and key message alignment and manage review/approval lifecycle
* Support All Hands meetings, including agenda setting and content development
* Identify ad-hoc communication needs (ex. organizational changes) and execute on message development, content building, channel identification and distribution
* If desired by senior leaders/executives, help identify thought leadership platforms and create content plans to evangelize key messages and narratives, both internally and external (ex. LinkedIn)

* Programmatic Communications
* Develop program-based communications plans for communications campaigns, operational activities, and marketing and sales enablement programs

* Intranet Support
* Maintain, update and assess appropriate content for user-friendly SharePoint sites

Experience Required

* Minimum of 5 years' experience in program development, stakeholder management, and communications within a large corporate environment
* Experience working in a matrixed environment and demonstrated ability to influence others toward a common vision or goal
* Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
* Experience with change management and/or organizational transformation
* Thorough, detail-oriented project management skills with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
* Strong emotional intelligence, influencing and relationship skills, including appreciation and understanding of cultural differences globally
* Stakeholder management skills
* Agile, pragmatic and flexible in a fast-paced, semi-virtual environment
