Security Sergeant

Summary

To provide a secure environment for patient care functions of the Medical Center. To provide for the protection of patients, visitors, staff, buildings, property and grounds. To serve as the lead Supervisor during periods when the Captain is not at the Medical Center. Must meet all requirements for and be able to perform the duties of a security officer.

• Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Two to four years in law enforcement or public contract security, with healthcare security preferred.

• Must have a valid Maryland Driver’s License, or a valid driver’s license from a neighboring state jurisdiction (PA, DC) if this is their permanent primary residence. Employee is not permitted to have a suspended or revoked Maryland License on file even if their home state license for their primary residence is valid.

• Must obtain a Special Police Commission through the MD State Police.
• Must be certified or become certified by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) as a Healthcare Security Officer when given the opportunity by the Medical Center to attend.
• Must maintain current CPR certification.

• Computer proficiency and technical aptitude; ability to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook;
  Meditech (if applicable);
  Epic (if applicable);
  Performance Manager/Net Learning.
• Must read, write, and speak English in an understandable manner.
• Can work independently and make independent decisions when necessary.
• Effectively communicate and deal tactfully with personnel, visitors, patients, physicians, customers, and the general public.
• Flexible, has personal integrity, and functions effectively as a team with other employees.
• Follows written and oral instructions.
• Accurately type 20 words per minute.
• Knows legal requirements when conducting investigations and interviewing witnesses and suspects.
• Knows Joint Commission Standards applicable to Safety, Security, and the Environment of Care.
• Can work overtime to support the security needs of the Medical Center.
• Can remain at Mercy for extended periods (two to three days) when adverse weather or special security situations warrant.

• Knowledgeable of Mercy Disciplinary Policy and other relevant personnel management policies.
• Must become a Certified Healthcare Security Officer through IAHSS when offered by the Medical Center.
• If officer fails the initial certification examination, one retest is allowed at their own expense; refusal will result in counseling with Human Resources.
• Staff who are unable to complete competency at the second testing will be referred to Human Resources for counseling regarding vacant positions they may be qualified for.
• Staff referred for inadequately meeting role-specific competency standards have one month to transfer to another position; otherwise they will be terminated.

USD $21.98 per hour.

USD $36.27 per hour.

Compensation decisions are made in alignment with internal equity, role scope, and market data to ensure fair and consistent pay practices. Most new hires are typically placed within the lower to mid-portion of the range; offers above that level are reserved for candidates with advanced or highly specialized qualifications.
