POSITION SUMMARY
This is semiskilled and skilled maintenance and repair work. Work involves performance of a variety of tasks in the maintenance, repair, and construction of City streets, walks, storm drainage, cemeteries, trees, and similar facilities. Work includes the operation of motorized equipment and the expenditure of heavy physical labor. Work is performed under general supervision of the Public Works Crew leader and is reviewed through observation for results obtained, including completeness and workmanship.
This position is a full time on-site position reporting to the City of Batavia's Public Works building. A typical work schedule for this position is Monday to Friday 7:00 AM-3:30PM. Schedule subject to change based on operational needs.
Successful candidates will be capable of performing a variety of physical tasks in all types of weather and will be available to respond to emergencies on days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays on a 7/24/365 basis.
Starting pay is $31.98 an hour or the equivalent of $66,520 annually. This position is covered under the IBEW Local #196 (Street) collective bargaining agreement and is classified as non-exempt, with excellent benefits.
Residency within 16 miles of City Limits required within 1 year of employment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates various types of equipment and performs a variety of tasks in maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, storm drains, sidewalks, curbs, storm sewer lines, cemeteries, and other similar facilities.
Responsible for snow and ice removal during the winter months, operating plow trucks, and other similar equipment.
Operates front-end loader, backhoe, street sweeper and other similar equipment.
Operates a variety of non-vehicular equipment such as chain saws, welding torches, brush chipper, weed eaters, or related equipment.
Drives dump trucks to haul gravel, sand, asphalt, and salt; plows snow; spreads salt.
Performs preventive checks of vehicles and equipment used; may assist the mechanic in repairing and maintaining vehicles and equipment.
Performs landscaping activities including mowing grass, sweeping and raking grounds, planting and trimming trees and shrubs.
Performs road maintenance and repair tasks including heating asphalt, patching potholes and cracks, sidewalks, and curbs; operates concrete saws, air hammer, and drills.
Performs activities necessary to paint, construct, and install street and other signs; performs tasks necessary to the blocking off of construction sites including making barricades, placing flashers, and flagging traffic all in compliance with MUTCD and IDOT standards
Sells gravesites; digs graves; organizes burial processes within City cemeteries, maintains records.
Cleans and makes minor repairs to tools and equipment, including lubricating equipment and sharpening tools.
Ensures that equipment is used safely and in accordance with standard operating procedures and precautions.
Performs heavy physical labor loading and unloading trucks and attaching and detaching accessories to equipment such as plows and spreaders.
May prepare routine records on work and equipment.
