Customer Service Worker - SME

Essential Job Functions

• Work all field service orders pertaining to correct reading and billing of water accounts.
• Report all unusual or hazardous conditions of meters or meter boxes.
• Turn meters on or off, verify meter readings, check for leaks, faulty plumbing, meters out of order, broken seals, straight lines, and correct mailing and service addresses.
• Verify account information for billing office, notify new tenants to sign for services, reread meters because of customer complaints or significant variations in month‑to‑month consumption.
• Discontinue services if payments are not received, recheck sealed meters for tampering, locate and uncover meters, inspect plumbing for switched lines and lines tied together illegally.
• Conduct surveys or special projects as needed, sort field work, sequence new accounts, verify new installations, answer customer complaints in field. Read meters on assigned route.
• Drive a City vehicle.

• Perform other duties as required.

Requires 100% on‑site work. Works Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Performs work indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather; exposed to extreme cold, heat, fumes/odor, dust/mites, animals, chemical hazards; deals with upset and irate customers.

• Water meter operations and customer service.
• City geography and street locations, hand pumps, meter reading processors.
• Customer service operation, policies, and city ordinances pertaining to utilities.

• Make accurate arithmetic computations.
• Read and speak effectively.
• Make decisions.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
• Use tools such as shovels, meter box keys, wrenches, sight glasses, and screwdriver.

• Constantly see and hear, drive, sort, write by hand, use a calculator.
• Lift/carry objects weighing up to 65 lbs.; hold objects weighing up to 10 lbs.; kneel, lift, sit, squat, stand, stoop, twist body.
• Infrequently climb, walk, pull and push objects weighing up to 65 lbs.

High school graduation or equivalent supplemented by training in customer relations/services. Minimum three (3) years’ experience reading meters and performing customer service work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience providing the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job.

Must possess a valid Class C driver's license with a good driving record. CDL license required within 6 months of employment. Other state valid driver's licenses equivalent to Texas Class C with a good driving record will be considered. Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency that you possess a valid Texas driver's license.
