OpportunityA permanent Lead Senior Geotechnical Engineer will join the Consulting team based in the Belfast office. The 130‑strong Belfast Design Hub delivers a range of local, national and international projects for key clients such as the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Roads, DfI Water & Drainage Directorate (WDD) and Translink. The multidisciplinary team includes Highway & Rail Engineering, Bridge/Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, River & Coastal Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Traffic Engineering/Transport Planning, and serves as Amey’s BIM Centre of Excellence.

The Ground Engineering Team has 15 geotechnical practitioners, including Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists, who play a pivotal role on all major and minor civil/structural engineering schemes.
Core Geotechnical Consultancy Services- Desk Studies / Feasibility Assessments
- Ground Investigations – scoping, planning, procurement, supervision and reporting
- Design of earthworks, rock slopes, reinforced soil, foundations, retaining structures and ground improvement schemes
- Technical review and Geotechnical Risk Analysis
- Geotechnical Asset Management
Lead Senior Geotechnical Engineer – providing effective support and assistance to the Principal Engineer and/or Technical Director, taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior engineers and technicians.
Responsibilities- Lead a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
- Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of scheme deliverables, ensuring quality, cost and programme criteria are met.
- Oversee the actions of junior staff and take responsibility for their outputs.
- Control budgets and manage costs associated with deliverables for commercial success of projects within portfolio.
- Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attend progress meetings and respond to queries.
- Contribute to the preparation of bids and the general work‑winning function.
- Drive effective health and safety practices within the team.
- Chartered or Incorporate status as defined by the Engineering Council with a relevant professional body.
- Developed experience and expertise within the geotechnical field, gained in a Senior Engineer role or equivalent.
- Comprehensive knowledge of technical reports procedures (CG 300 & CD 622) and design production in line with EC7 and NWR Standards.
- Understanding of rail earthworks asset management procedures (CIV/065).
- Ownership of preparation and checking of deliverables, ensuring reasonable standards.
- Very good working knowledge of relevant software and analytical tools (e.g., Wallap, Slope
W). - Demonstrated commercial awareness and understanding of CDM and risk assessment.
- Substantial experience in managing and communicating hazards and risks on projects, ensuring appropriate risk mitigation and transference.
- Good understanding of interface management and alignment of deliverables with other disciplines.
