JOB TITLE:

Para Educator – Special Education LAC & Developmental Preschool

REPORTS TO:

Building Principal and Assigned Teacher

UNIT CLASSIFICATION: PSE Para Educators

PRIMARY

PURPOSE:

Employees in this job classification are directly involved in helping students achieve their maximum potential through the instructional program.

Responsibilities include:

1) One-to-one instruction of students
2) Small group instruction
3) In and out of classroom supervision of students
4) General assistance to the teacher.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Tutors students individually or in small groups in a variety of learning activities assigned by the teacher; promotes student understanding of materials presented. Adjusts tasks to suit needs of students if necessary.
  • Incorporate IEP requirements within students’ daily lesson plan.
  • Maintain records and charts indicating students’ progress.
  • Provide students with practice on identified skill areas.
  • Assist students in their understanding of instruction concepts.
  • Guide independent work.
  • Inform classroom teacher of students’ progress or concerns.
  • Assist and carry out directions provided by other staff members (e.g. SLP, SLPA, OT, COTA, Behavior Specialist, Autism Specialist, Teacher of the Visually Impaired, etc)
  • Regular sanitation of classroom manipulatives, tables, etc.
  • Serve as the chief source of information and help to substitute teacher.
  • Mainstream students in regular classroom settings as requested.
  • Provide positive behavioral support.
  • Assists teacher in monitoring student behavior and disciplines students as authorized.
  • Restrain a student from harming self or others.
  • May be required to provide detailed one-to-one assistance with changing, diapering, wiping and personal hygiene, etc.
  • May be required to assist students with feeding and administer tube feeding.
  • Attend meetings and trainings as required.
  • Fulfill other related duties as assigned.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Observe and utilize reasonable and professional medical/safety precautions to include positioning children in a safe and secure manner in adaptive equipment and transferring orthopedically disabled children to and from different equipment including toilets.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

Communicates regularly and in a positive manner with students, parents/guardians, instructional and support staff. Required to deal with a wide range of student behaviors; required to deal with a wide range of physical and emotional disabilities; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The daily work is performed in a classroom setting. May be required to work outdoors in inclement weather. Potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; exposed to student noise levels; required to lift, move and position students and equipment; playground supervision and bus loading requires working outdoors in inclement weather; required to attend to students’ personal hygiene; may be exposed to biting behavior;

may need to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids and cleaning or disinfecting compounds; required to work in non-routine positions for extended periods.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Must provide proof of high school diploma or G.E.D.

Pass State Assessment for Para Educators or

AA Degree or

72-quarter college credits or 48-semester credits at the one hundred level or higher or

Completed an apprenticeship as a para educator, in a program

registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training

Council.
