University Health Services (UHS) provides comprehensive medical, mental health, health promotion, and insurance services to the entire Berkeley Campus community, including students, faculty, staff, and affiliated community members. With nearly 70,000 medical visits and 40,000 mental health visits to the Tang Center each year, UHS supports a large and diverse population.
Position SummaryHealthcare IT delivers and manages a comprehensive suite of technology services, infrastructure, healthcare systems, and specialized medical equipment that support both UHS and Recreational Sports operations. This includes Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Practice Management systems, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, and medical imaging systems. Healthcare IT manages over 50 physical and virtual servers and supports more than 500 desktop workstations and 500+ network nodes for more than 750 staff members and volunteers.

Responsibilities- Define, design, and implement systems, services, and technology solutions. Propose and implement system or device enhancements—including software, hardware, and network configuration—for projects or services of moderately complex scope. Help develop and implement network security programs for the extended healthcare network, install and configure network equipment, oversee edge switches, VLANs, network segmentation, and complex port security protocols, and implement next‑generation firewall equipment and end‑point protection tools.
- Propose and implement highly complex system enhancements that improve performance and reliability. Monitor critical healthcare systems for performance, reliability, and security; apply appropriate updates, patches, and system changes. Evaluate new system management tools and lead efforts to upgrade or replace systems when appropriate.
- Provide oversight and support for centralized computer servers, and make recommendations for the purchase or upgrade of new computer hardware. Evaluate server, workstation, and network equipment, and recommend new or upgraded systems and peripherals.
- Analyze, acquire, install, modify, and support operating systems, databases, utilities, and Internet/intranet‑related tools. Perform advanced analysis to monitor and support critical systems, server infrastructure, database applications, file servers, and network operations.
- Apply advanced infrastructure concepts to operate internal data communications systems, including LANs and WANs. Perform moderately advanced network administration and complex security controls—such as firewall ACL management, VPN, VLAN segmentation, network access controls, logging, web filtering, and traffic analysis—to protect the network and sensitive health data.
- Execute security controls to prevent unauthorized access. Implement significant, highly complex security controls across the infrastructure. Perform HIPAA security controls and regular HIPAA risk analysis audits to ensure compliance with HIPAA requirements.
- Conduct highly complex systems programming and support activities. Develop complex scripts and programming tasks to manage interconnected system environments.
- Contribute systems knowledge to planning, designing, and implementing networked systems. Work with the Network Operations Team to configure and manage healthcare networks, adding advanced security controls beyond campus standards.
- Administer security policies to control access to systems. Oversee complex Group Policy rules for the extended healthcare network, manage groups and policies, and support an extensive account‑management and access‑control system for authentication and authorization.
- Interact with senior internal and external personnel. Participate on a team of systems and infrastructure professionals, work closely with senior-level engineers and administrators, serve as a technical lead on critical technology projects, and advise senior leadership on capital investment decisions.
