- Ensure safe and high standard of care for older patients, operating within departmental and hospital guidelines.
- Maintain effective communication with medical colleagues and allied health professionals, update patient notes and inform relatives of progress.
- Perform clinical duties as outlined in the job plan to the appropriate level of expertise.
- Provide clinical training and supervision of junior staff, medical students and allied health professionals.
- Comply with CPD, revalidation requirements of the relevant college and the GMC.
- Participate in mentoring sessions with the departmental clinical/educational supervisor.
- Engage in the quality improvement programme.
- Complete annual appraisal using the UHB system.

Job ResponsibilitiesThe unit comprises three wards (Ward 21, Ward 29, Ward 30) for medical older patients and two wards (Ward 32, Ward 31) for acute stroke patients. Additional facilities include an (OPAD) assessment unit, FSDEC (Frailty SDEC), a multidisciplinary day unit, and outpatient clinics for TIA, minor stroke, Parkinson’s disease, falls, osteoporosis, and frail older people community referrals. The unit is supported by community intermediate care rehabilitation teams and multidisciplinary staff such as therapists, pharmacists, specialist nurses and social workers.
Residents and registrars provide supervised inpatient care for older patients with acute illnesses and rehabilitation needs in stroke wards, and undertake outpatient clinics in the day hospital under the guidance of consultant medical staff. The post holder will gain broad-based experience in Healthcare of Older People and Stroke, working at ST3 level in Geriatrics and General Internal Medicine under direct consultant supervision.
PersonSpecification Qualifications
- Medical Degree
- Fully registered with the General Medical Council
- Advanced Life Support certification
- Minimum 2 years clinical experience or equivalent, with relevant experience in a specialty area within the NHS
- Previous experience at Registrar level
