Specialty Doctor in Urgent Treatment Centre

The postholder is expected to work on the middle grade tier in the Urgent Treatment Centre provide the relevant expertise and experience necessary to ensure the efficient primary management of urgent treatment cases. The postholder will be required to work with the other team members in the management of the department workload. The postholder will also be expected to provide supervision to the junior members of the team.

There is a CESR programme in place for those doctors who are interested in pursuing a CESR in Emergency Medicine to gain entry to the Specialist Register. Also offered is the opportunity to undertake quality improvement roles within the department to help gain exposure to management and develop individuals into experienced Specialty Doctors. There is an active programme of multi-disciplinary teaching within the department that successful candidates will be expected to both attend and deliver.

We also take part in regular Journal Club meetings with Emergency Department staff from neighbouring Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust. Specialty doctors are encouraged to undertake Clinical & Educational Supervisor training and have the opportunity to formally supervise junior doctors and medical students from UCLAN and Lancaster Universities. A Consultant mentor will be provided as support for individual development.

The department itself has a large multi-disciplinary team encompassing Consultants, Specialty Doctors, Higher Emergency Medicine Trainees, Junior Clinical Fellows, Foundation doctors, General Practice Trainees, Advanced Care Practitioners, Physicians Associates, Emergency Nurse Practitioners and Physiotherapy practitioners. As well as the nursing team. The department also supports the education of medical students from UCLAN and Lancaster Universities. We are a teaching unit providing teaching for all grades of staff.

You will be assigned an educational supervisor who will meet with you regularly to ensure your educational needs are met whilst you are with us and we encourage Junior Clinical Fellows to undertake the Life Support Courses whilst you are with us. To aid this you will have access to a study leave budget. There is simulation training which is run on the shop floor and that you will be encouraged to attend.

Duties of the Post The postholder is expected to work on the middle grade tier in the Urgent Treatment Centre provide the relevant expertise and experience necessary to ensure the efficient primary management of urgenttreatment cases. The postholder will be required to work with the other team members in the managementof the department workload. The postholder will also be expected to provide supervision to the junior members of the team.

The postholder will be expected to undertake full clinical duties including the running of clinics or assessing and managing acutely unwell patients, along with patients presenting with injuries both major and minor.

The care may very occasionally include initial resuscitation where appropriate. The postholder will beexpected to manage the caseload within urgent treatment and organise immediate management and planfor discharge or where required referral for follow up. The referral could be to GPs to an appropriatespecialist team for continued hospital care or to other services.

The postholder will be expected to follow the various guidelines and protocols issued in the department. Inthe case of major trauma cases, cardiac arrests and critically ill patients attending the department, thepostholder will be expected to act in a team leadership role, following appropriate life support guidelines.

Postholders would be expected to gain and maintain certification in ALS, ATLS etc and APLS or recognisedequivalents to these courses.

For entry to the Speciality Doctor grade, applicants must have at least four years of post-registration training, of which at least two years must be in a speciality training programme in Emergency Medicine (for example, ACCS) or must be able to demonstrate comparable skills and competencies for example having completed General Practitioner Training. The job title of the post is Speciality Doctor in Urgent Treatment Medicine.
