Test Engineer – Indianapolis, Indiana

Job Description

As the Test Engineer, you will be responsible for planning, managing, developing, and overseeing the execution of test procedures, data collection, and analysis. Work involves testing and analyzing various powertrain systems and subsystems in the test cell and/or vehicle-level environment. You will standardize procedures, configure test systems, collect and analyze data, prepare test reports, and interface daily with internal and external business partners and support personnel.

This role offers hands‑on involvement with Allison products, industrial test equipment, and powertrain systems such as high horsepower engines, dynamo meters, propulsion systems, drives, heat exchangers, and cooling systems.

  • Establish and generate standard operating procedures and document practices.
  • Utilize a systems engineering approach to develop, implement, and complete reliable, repeatable testing supporting business needs and timelines.
  • Lead department continuous improvement activities to increase testing efficiency, reduce cost, and enhance quality.
  • Participate in and lead planning efforts and status meetings, promoting collaboration on all work-related assignments.
  • Plan, manage, and oversee the execution of product tests internal or external to Engineering Operations, including managing multiple projects on time and within budget.
  • Ensuring facilities and support areas are prepared to match test flow needs, issuing instructional documents and work requests as required.
  • Assist in gathering and analyzing test data to ensure validity, and communicate technical data to engineering organizations and agencies.
  • Modify durability test cycles and post‑processing applications using basic computer programming skills.
  • Document test events and results through test reports, log entries, and database entries.
  • Prepare program bids or cost estimates as needed.
  • Adhere to Test Operations Manual, PE Procedures, and Standard Procedures.
  • Assist in assembly and disposition of test units and parts.
  • Continuously improve the engineering development process and establish best practices for testing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience in Mechanical, Electrical, or Automotive Engineering.
  • Proficient oral and written business communication skills.
  • High level of interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to set and meet goals for all deliverables.
  • Moderate mechanical competence.
  • Proficiency with computer operations, including Microsoft Office tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a laboratory test environment.
  • Knowledge of automatic transmission operation, clutches, controls (hydraulic and electrical), hydraulics, gears, electric machines, and hybrid/electrified propulsion systems.
  • Experience and understanding of computer programming for test cycle and data analysis support.
  • Troubleshooting experience in electronic controls, mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
