Overview

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

The Communication Director is responsible for developing the Commission's communication strategy. The Director will directly manage communication activities that promote and enhance the Commission and aging issues. The Director will work closely with senior management to develop communications on a variety of strategic initiatives to advance the Commission's position within the aging network as well as with older adults. The Director will also manage all communications products and services including: print publications; Web, social media and other online communications; media and public relations; and marketing.

Responsibilities

* Develops and implements the Commission's communications strategy and broaden awareness and visibility of its programs and priorities.
* Works with leadership team to identify important and emerging issues within the aging field and guide communication strategies to support them.
* Oversees the development of all print communications including marketing, collateral materials and electronic communications.
* Increases and manages the Commission's presence on social media.
* Serves as a spokesperson and lead point person on media interactions to help promote the Commission.
* Prioritizes media opportunities and prepares talking points and other supporting materials.
* Actively engages, cultivates and manages press relationships to ensure coverage of Commission programs, special events, public announcements, aging issues, and other projects.
* Manages the Commission's outreach and education including television, radio, and print opportunities.
* Works with the City's web team and oversee website content related to the Commission and/or older adults.
* Supervises and oversees the day-day activities of the Communications Unit.
* Manages communications team to support the development and execution of the communications strategy.
* Promotes team environment.
* Assists with Commission events as needed.
* Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

* At least four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the field of communications or public. A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public policy or a related field and may be substituted for two (2) years of required experience. A master's degree in the above mentioned fields preferred and may be substituted for three (3) years of required experience. Supervisory experience preferred.
* Experience developing and implementing communications strategies.
* Experience with planning, writing, editing, and producing newsletters, press releases, marketing literature, and other print publications.
* Experience with implementing and managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently.
* Experience and commitment to work collaboratively with others including staff, constituents, and partners.
* Experience building relationships with reporters and editors to achieve placements.
* Experience in building and maintaining relationships across sectors.
* Experience with content management systems and email marketing preferred.
* Creative and thoughtful on how new media technologies can be utilized.
* Excellent writing, presentation, organizational and supervisory skills.
* Ability to work independently; to show flexibility and adapt to changing priorities.
* Ability to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive reports.
* Ability to coordinate multiple projects and think strategically.
* Ability to give team feedback.
* Excellent creative and problem solving skills.
* Demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace.
* Compliance to documented policies and procedures.
* Experience in typical office software systems (Microsoft Office or equivalent) preferred.
* Experience with InDesign and Adobe products preferred.
* Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.

Bilingual preferred.
