Position:  Director, Communications & Media with Social Finance

Our Services

Social Investments

In our Social Investment practice, we develop and implement a suite of innovative financing mechanisms, known as Pay for Success, to connect performance to payment. We started with the Social Impact Bond, a unique public-private partnership in which impact investors provide upfront capital to scale effective nonprofits and governments repay investors only if outcomes are achieved. Today our Social Investments portfolio also includes the Career Impact Bond and the Outcomes Rate Card.

Each Pay for Success strategy incorporates cross-sector partnerships, clearly defined outcomes, data-driven decision-making, strong governance and accountability, and private investment capital where appropriate. To date, we have mobilized more than $110M across 12 Pay for Success projects. In addition to scaling our current strategies, our Social Investments team is constantly innovating to develop new tools to improve outcomes and achieve systems-level change.

Advisory Services

In our Advisory practice, we deploy the principles of Pay for Success to help our clients across the sectors achieve greater impact. We identify best-in-class interventions, execute economic analyses, perform rigorous due diligence, quantify impact, and build service provider capacity. In every project we work with clients to develop creative and customized solutions – be it one of our Pay for Success tools or not – that are tailored to the particular needs of each community.

Role and Responsibilities

The Director of Media & Communications will spearhead the development and day-to-day execution of the firm’s media and communications strategy in order to amplify our impact and increase visibility. Based in our office in Boston, MA, this position will manage two full-time communications team members in addition to working very closely with the C.E.O. in order to achieve the organization’s strategic communications goals. Successful candidates are those who thrive in settings that demand fresh thinking, incisive decision making, cross-functional collaboration, strong project oversight, and continuous improvement. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Marketing & Communications

Revisit and own firm’s overall brand strategy, ensuring alignment with firm’s value proposition for clients and employees.
Narrative building: develop targeted messaging and customized marketing collateral with an eye towards design and innovation. Relevant audiences for Social Finance span government, nonprofit, philanthropic and private sectors.
Ensure consistency among all branded materials, creating usage guidelines and message training for employees.
Oversee firm-wide approach to conferences from a marketing and branding perspective. Proactively identify must-attend events with highest ROI, coordinate staffing for those events, and support employees’ preparation for each conference strategy, presentation, and/or panel.
Media & Public Relations

Leverage an existing network of media contacts to ensure placement in relevant outlets, while striving to create new relationships that will help amplify the strategic priorities of the firm.
Actively pitch new timely stories, project updates, innovations, and firm wins to local, national and industry specific news outlets.
Answer incoming inquiries from press or others interested in Social Finance’s work,
Identify opportunities to share wins with the public, while also being ready to develop strategic crisis management plans if necessary.
Digital / Social Media

Evaluate current social media strategy and reinvigorate as appropriate to optimize firm’s digital presence.
Continuously revisit and update firm’s website to optimize content and design, driving traffic for stakeholders and delivering on our mission to educate the market.
Writing

Produce original content independently and co-develop content with members of the communications, social investment and advisory teams. Productions can include white papers, op-eds, blog posts, podcasts, speeches, strategic communications with partners, etc.
Firm Building

In addition to the Director’s communications responsibilities, each Social Finance Director serves on the firm’s management team and contributes to the building and development of staff, the firm, and the field. These responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Collaborating across the firm to support business development and fundraising efforts
Supporting firm’s talent management efforts via recruiting, coaching, goal setting, mentoring, and ongoing performance management
Serving on the firm’s commitments committee
Supporting internal capacity building efforts
Representing the firm in public forums and/or contributing to various publications
Qualifications

10+ years of professional experience in a marketing / communications setting
Demonstrated media placements through proactive pitching and relationship building with reporters
Strong digital acumen, experience implementing social media strategy
Excellent writing skills, spanning short-form and long-form copy
Strong project management experience; ability to lead teams and manage others toward project completion and under tight deadlines
Advanced interpersonal skills; ability to identify, build, and maintain relationships across sectors that are integral to the firm and its mission
Commitment to excellence and accuracy, with an ability to manage multiple and competing priorities simultaneously
Creative problem-solver, with a willingness to constructively express contrary points of view and seek consensus among strong, independent thinkers
Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of key issues in effective nonprofit management, social interventions, and/or impact investing
Sense of humor and flexibility to regularly incorporate the feedback of others into work processes
Proficiency in Mailchimp, WordPress, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Analytics, Google Suite, Microsoft Suite, Adobe Creative Suite a plus.
