More about this role

Are you passionate about improving your local environment to make it a safer, more welcoming and accessible place for people to cycle? Do you want to make the most of the limited time you have available for the maximum impact?

Local Representatives tap into the experience and skills of the national Cycling Advocacy Network to bring change; influencing decision makers to help enable more people to cycle. There is no minimum time commitment, we value whatever time you can commit at any point. Where possible you will join an informal working hub of at least three Local Representatives, giving and receiving peer support.

Currently the Regional Coordinator is staff member Gwenda Owen, who has oversight of activities across Wales, and who can help with questions and link you to helpful people/resources. As the network grows we hope to have Regional Coordinators in different parts of the country.

You will be set up on Cycling UK’s Volunteer Forum, linking with Local Reps across the country, sharing insights, contributing to discussions and asking for assistance. Local Representatives must be members (or affiliate members) of Cycling UK.

Why we want you

Cycling UK inspires and helps people to cycle and keep cycling. We want to support you to create local environments that enable more people to cycle. Local Representatives have a crucially important role in highlighting and hopefully helping to remove some of the barriers that discourage people from cycling.

What you will be doing
  • This depends on your local context and your personal interests, and may involve:
  • Networking with cycling groups, active travel campaigners and community groups
  • Liaising with local councillors, cycling officers and responding to consultations
  • Raising awareness of cycling issues in your area (eg. via social media and/or local press)
  • Getting to know Cycling UK's policies and views, and promoting them in your local area
The skills you need
  • Enthusiasm to improve cycling in your local area
  • Some knowledge of the issues facing cyclists (and not-yet-cyclists) in your area
  • Interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with key decision makers
  • The ability to give and receive constructive feedback
  • Access to emails and the internet
What's in it for you
  • The chance to make a positive change in your local area
  • Help make cycling accessible to everyone
  • Have a hand in changing the way decisions impacting on cycling are made
  • Support and advice from the wider network of Local Representatives
  • The opportunity to share your knowledge and experience with others
Disclaimer

This is an unpaid volunteering role.
