Location:

Salary Range: $75,000 – $130,000 (commensurate with experience)
About Synergy Land and Environmental Synergy is a growing Canadian environmental consulting firm serving the oil and gas, energy, forestry, mining, and agriculture sectors. With operations across Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, we specialize in regulatory compliance, environmental planning, and ecological assessments .
We are seeking a Senior Wetland Ecologist to lead our wetland services in Alberta. This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of a specialized service area, contribute to company growth, and provide scientific leadership in a supportive and entrepreneurial environment.
Key Responsibilities Lead wetland projects from field assessment to final reporting, ensuring compliance with Alberta Wetland Policy , the Water Act , and other applicable legislation.
Conduct wetland classification, delineation, functional assessments, and hydrological monitoring .
Prepare and review Wetland Assessment and Impact Reports (WAIRs) , WAIFs , ABWRET-A evaluations , and Water Act applications.
Provide clear regulatory advice to clients and internal teams.
Collaborate with Synergy leadership on service development , internal methodologies, and quality standards.
Mentor and support junior biologists and technicians in wetland ecology and regulatory workflows.
Maintain strong client relationships by delivering high-quality, science-based environmental solutions.
What We’re Looking For Education & Credentials
B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science , or a related field.
Designation as P.Biol., R.P.Bio., or P.Ag. (or eligibility).
Willingness to obtain or already certified as an Authenticating Wetland Professional in Alberta.
Experience 5+ years in wetland ecology and environmental consulting, preferably in Alberta.
Proven experience with wetland fieldwork , regulatory applications, and mitigation planning.
Knowledge of soils, vegetation , hydrology , and prairie/boreal wetland systems.
Comfortable leading field teams and working in outdoor conditions across Alberta.
Technical Skills Proficiency in ArcGIS, Arc Map, or QGIS for spatial analysis and mapping.
Strong technical writing skills for regulatory submissions and client reporting .
Ability to interpret and apply Alberta Wetland Policy and Water Act procedures.
Soft Skills & Leadership Natural collaborator with a solutions-oriented approach to regulatory work.
Able to mentor, coach, and train junior team members in a fast-paced consulting environment.
Strong communicator who can explain technical concepts clearly to clients and regulators.
