Description

Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full‑time Regular Electrician.

Operations and Maintenance (O&M) department is responsible for ensuring building structures and systems for all University owned and leased properties are operated and maintained in a reliable, efficient and cost effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment.

This position reports to the Supervisor, Maintenance and is part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit. The normal shift is 7.5 hours per day, five days per week, Monday to Friday, with possible shift transfers, overtime, standby, and callouts during emergencies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Complete assigned installations, alterations, maintenance, and repairs to a broad range of electrical equipment and systems, and carry out operational functions.
  • Perform work in compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code, University of Calgary standards, policies, and procedures, and any applicable building codes.
  • Communicate with the customer, contractor, manufacturer, supplier, and technical support, and other trade staff to successfully complete tasks.
  • Explore all options and innovative solutions required to ensure minimal electrical interruptions of building systems and equipment.
  • Maintain records, as‑built blueprints, and schematic diagrams when altering any existing or new systems.
  • Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Monitor and review information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems.
  • Develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.
Summary of

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensures work assigned is completed as required and is in compliance with the University specifications, standards and procedures.
  • Familiarizes with all existing University structures and systems, and acquires knowledge of new trends, techniques, codes and equipment.
  • Ensures that equipment, work spaces, and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes, and are maintained in a safe working order.
  • Manages own time effectively and keeps immediate supervisor informed of activities and progress.
  • Provides customer service within the university and departmental standards by interacting respectfully with co‑workers, supervisors, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students, and other members of the community.
  • Demonstrates discretion, confidentiality, and attention to detail.
  • Willing to learn, adapt to change, and actively participate in training and development.
  • Meets OHS initiatives, follows University OHS policies and legislation, and ensures personal and co‑worker safety when completing tasks.
  • Familiar with the University of Calgary Statement on Principles of Conduct and conducts oneself accordingly.
  • Ensures regular work attendance and timely reporting for shift start.
  • Maintains appropriate personal hygiene, attire and grooming.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • Provincial or interprovincial Electrical Trade Certification with 3-5 years of experience.
  • Familiarity with recognized practices, techniques, tools, test equipment, instrumentation, and safety procedures associated with the electrical trade.
  • Experience in commercial, industrial and institutional electrical applications with a good understanding of the Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, shop drawings, specifications, and maintenance manuals.
  • Knowledge of installation, maintenance, and operation of 120/208, 277/480, 347/600 volt power distribution; incandescent, fluorescent, high‑intensity discharge lighting and control; standby generators; battery banks; UPS emergency power systems; motor and motor control; heating and cooling control; variable frequency drives and soft‑start motor starters; and troubleshooting, repair and retrofitting of electrical systems.
  • Asset:
    Experience with 2,300 volt up to 13,200 volt power distribution; electrical project coordination; design, estimating, as‑built and record keeping; harmonic distortion, power quality monitoring and mitigation; power metering.
