Position Summary

The school counselors utilize evidence-based and nationally recognized instructional practices to interface with the educational process and meet the needs of schools, students, and families in the Camas School District. Using a strengths-based, culturally-responsive, and system-wide approach, school counselors focus on social-emotional health, prevention and intervention by facilitating engagement between schools, families, and the community. Using their training in systems theory, advocacy, and cultural competence, as well as the four components of the American School Counselor Association (define, manage, deliver, and assess), school social workers address the District's Strategic Imperatives by providing direct services to students and families, linking children, youth, and families to community agency resources, providing Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) on all three tiers, and aligning services to meet the educational needs of all students.

Qualifications:
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) certificate with a School Social Worker or School Counselor endorsement.
  • Essential Functions:
  • Identifies challenges in a child's living situation (home, school, and community) that may affect the child's adjustment, ability, and attendance in the educational setting.
  • Conducts home visits and meet with families regularly.
  • Develops and facilitates culturally-responsive support groups and provides students with strategies to cope with and overcome difficulties impacting school performance.
  • Assists parents/guardians with understanding of District decisions, policies, and procedures, including Multi-Tiered System of Supports.
  • Identifies, mobilizes, and coordinates school and community resources to enable students to learn as effectively as possible in the educational setting.
  • Contributes knowledge, skills, and techniques in the areas of social-emotional and mental health and human behavior to parents/guardians and school team members.
  • Develops and implements student and parent support groups and activities.
  • Attends and participates in department meetings, in-services, and trainings.
  • Plans, conducts, and participates in educational workshops and presentations.
  • May serve as a member of school teams and provide information related to planning for the educational needs of children or students.
  • Performs other duties related to the position, as assigned.

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands:
    Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
