Position Overview
Reporting through the Deputy Fire Marshal, the Assistant Fire Marshal is functionally and administratively responsible to the Fire Marshal. The incumbent is responsible for the effective implementation of fire safety and fire prevention, including responsibility for providing information, advice and guidance to owners, occupants, employers, employees, contractors, architects, engineers, and the general public (clients), as to the requirements of the Nunavut Fire Safety Act and Regulations (FSA).

Responsibilities
The Assistant Fire Marshal will provide support and assistance to each regional community fire department and Fire Chief, conduct fire prevention inspections of structures and facilities where mandated, may assist with the development and delivery of regional and Territorial training courses, investigate and file detailed reports on fires resulting in a fatality, injury or large economic/financial loss and cause to investigate all other fires, and will help facilitate the delivery of fire protection services to the Nunavut communities.

Qualifications

Graduation from a recognized fire training college, IFSAC and/or Pro-Board certification or equivalent: NFPA 1001-Level 2, Fire Fighter Professional Qualification, NFPA 1031-Level 2, Fire Inspector, NFPA 1003-Fire Investigator, NFPA 1041-Level 1, Fire Service Instructor; and 3 years related experience in the fire service.

A Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Brake Certification.

Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and clear Vulnerable Sector Check (Highly Sensitive Position).

Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages (Inuktut, English and French) is considered an asset.

Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are considered assets.
