Job Description

Transportation - Bus Driver

$21.90 per hour after full training; $16.28 per hour during training.
30 hours per week guaranteed.

Nights and weekends off.
Opportunities to pick up extra assignments.

Summers off. Nine‑month work agreement.

Overview: Transport CRCSD students for morning and afternoon routes, including tie‑ins, while managing appropriate student behavior.

Essential Duties
  • Safely transport students to and from school, activities, etc.
  • Effectively manage student behaviors
  • Build rapport with students, peers, supervisors, parents, school personnel, and the community
  • Use professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Present a professional appearance, including attire and attentiveness
  • Complete all required trainings, meetings, classes, and professional development
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and presentable vehicle interior and exterior
  • Evacuate vehicle safely in emergencies
  • Check student roster to ensure proper ridership
  • Maintain knowledge of student requirements (medical protocols, IEPs, etc.) and follow written protocols
  • Check vehicle for remaining/lost students, items, etc. when students are exiting
  • Secure students in required safety equipment and restraints (wheelchairs, harnesses, etc.)
  • Assist non‑ambulatory students into and out of the vehicle
  • Accurately complete reports and paperwork in a timely manner (vehicle maintenance requests, behavior referrals, timecards, directions, etc.)
  • Comply with federal, state, and district policies, procedures, and expectations
  • Utilize technology as required
  • Perform thorough pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections
  • Immediately report accidents
  • Ensure vehicle is properly fueled per department policy
  • Prepare vehicle for transport including inclement weather, harnesses, wheelchair tie‑downs, etc.
  • Operate various types of school buses and equipment, including wheelchair lifts, radios, and emergency equipment
  • Report safety or maintenance concerns promptly
  • Report all moving violations to the Transportation Manager
  • Clean bus per department procedures
  • Perform tie‑in assignments (e.g., transport athletic teams before route)
  • Transport students for EOS, Special Ed, or other ad‑hoc district needs
  • Lead a team by communicating information, checking staff in, and alerting the Fleet Supervisor of issues
  • Complete general clerical duties, including phone support and filing paperwork
  • Check spare vehicle fleet for operability (pre‑trip, fueling, operational testing)
  • Assist office or maintenance staff with special projects
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Valid Class B CDL license with appropriate endorsement
  • Valid DOT physical and medical certificate per FMCSA requirements
  • Pass pre‑employment and all subsequent background, agility, driving history, and substance‑abuse screenings
  • Pass random and reasonable‑suspicion alcohol and/or drug tests
  • Register and maintain an account with the FMCSA Clearinghouse; approve queries within 24 hours
  • Work well with diverse personalities
  • Effective problem‑solving skills
  • Knowledge of Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Professional driving experience preferred but not required
Physical Demands
  • Sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods
  • Ascending/descending approximately 14‑inch steps regularly
  • Entering and exiting vehicles regularly
  • Descend from back door in emergencies onto uncertain surfaces
  • Lifting/carrying students or objects up to 75 pounds over 100 feet
  • Pushing/pulling wheelchairs or objects up to 75 pounds over 100 feet
  • Continuous use of hands, fingers, and wrists repetitively
  • Using both hands and legs simultaneously
  • Repeated stooping, bending, and kneeling
  • Occasional pushing, pulling, and maintaining balance
  • Reach over head to 72‑inch height to operate wheel‑chair lift
  • Rapid mental/muscular coordination
  • Verbal, auditory, and written communication capabilities
  • Accurate depth perception and vision at varying distances
  • Operate mobile motorized equipment
  • Drive a vehicle to conduct work
  • Possible contact with blood‑borne pathogens and bodily fluids
  • Contact with cleaning chemicals
