GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT


The Clinical Veterinarian provides and oversees preventive and supportive veterinary care for laboratory animals at Massachusetts General Hospital, in concert with other professional staff in The Center for Comparative Medicine. This person also provides professional expertise in a collaborative research manner to investigators at MGH and elsewhere for animal model development and proper care and use of animal subjects. The position involves daily exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


The Following Duties are required:

  • Provide service to and train research staff on various components of proper animal use, preparation of animals for surgery, anesthesia, surgical technique, post-operative monitoring, injections, and sample collection;
  • Advises staff on preventive health programs, such as quarantine evaluation of new arrivals, sentinel surveillance of rodent colonies, annual physical examinations and semi-annual tuberculin testing of non-human primates;
  • Perform routine clinical rounds in vivaria throughout MGH as well as site visits to animal vendors and extramural satellite facilities where MGH animals are maintained;
  • Provide weekend/holiday/after-hours coverage for veterinary emergencies, in concert with other professional staff in CCM;
  • Participate in establishing, implementing and monitoring policies and procedures involving laboratory animal care and use that is in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations and current accreditation standards;
  • Comply with and follow CCM and MGH policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:


  • Doctoral degree in veterinary medicine from an AVMA-accredited institution.
  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in a state in the United States (Massachusetts preferred).
  • Eligible for USDA veterinary accreditation (accreditation preferred).
  • Completion of a post-doctoral residency / fellowship in Laboratory Animal Medicine or equivalent experience ( ~ 5 years) working with common laboratory animal species including rodents, rabbits, livestock and non-human primates.
  • Eligibility to sit for the examination for board certification in laboratory animal medicine by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine preferred.
  • Written and spoken proficiency in English and basic scientific terms.



SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

  • Proficient in verbal and written English, mathematics, word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail.
  • Has a customer-focused attitude and enjoys working with similarly dedicated persons in a team fashion within a high-energy research environment.
  • Communicates well with a variety of levels of employees and outside parties.
  • Willing to pursue continuous improvement in the duties described above, including but not limited to additional training and continuing education opportunities as they may arise.



WORKING CONDITIONS


The animal facility has a variety of environmental conditions. Specifically, employees may be exposed to noise, dust, chemicals, extreme heat, and animal waste products. The duration of exposure to any of the above is dependent on the assigned duties.
