Job Description & How to Apply Below

A full-time research technician position is immediately available in the laboratories of Dr. Ryan Corcoran and Dr. Nick Dyson at Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. We seek a highly motivated individual with a strong interest in pursuing a future academic career in science. This is a joint position between the two laboratories, assisting in translational cancer research projects under the supervision of the principal investigators and project leads therein. The candidate will take responsibility in basic science and translational research projects under close supervision of post-doctoral research fellows in the lab, as well as Dr. Corcoran and Dr. Dyson.

The Corcoran lab is involved in investigating new and effective therapies for gastrointestinal cancers, mainly colorectal, pancreatic and liver cancers. Our group is interested in elucidating novel mechanisms of resistance to targeted cancer therapeutics such as kinase inhibitors or immune checkpoint inhibitors (Ahronian LG et al. Cancer Discovery 2015, Hazar-Rethinam M et al. Cancer Discovery 2018, Ryan MB et al. Nat Rev Clin Oncol 2018).

The Dyson laboratory studies the role of the retinoblastoma tumor suppressor (RB), with the goal of using these insights to target tumor cells. RB inactivation is a genomic hallmark of small cell lung cancer, a common disease with a poor prognosis. Translational projects in the lab will focus on testing and developing new, targeted therapies for small-cell lung cancer using patient-derive xenograft (PDX) models and generating new models for this disease (Drapkin BJ et al. Cancer Discovery 2018).

  • In vivo assessment of drug response in mouse models, establishment of tumor xenografts, drug treatment and harvesting of tumor tissue.
  • Handling clinical samples for generation of patient-derived xenografts and direct analyses of human tumors.
  • Tissue culture techniques: maintenance of mouse/human cell lines in culture, cryopreservation, drug treatments, plasmid transfections, lentiviral transduction.
  • Perform standard molecular biology techniques (Western blotting, PCR, cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, CRISPR).
  • Has responsibility for ordering common laboratory reagents and general maintenance of the laboratory
  • Organizes and accurately maintains written and electronic records of experimental procedures and data collection. Data may be represented as graphs, charts, tables, illustrations, slides, and narrative reports.
  • Interpretation of experimental results
  • Participation in establishing new and optimizing existing techniques in the lab.
  • Assistance in preparation of manuscripts resulting from data generated in research projects.
  • Participation in and present data at weekly lab meetings and journal clubs.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Good communication skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Working knowledge of clinical research protocols
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks independently

  • Position requires a Bachelor of Science or similar degree.

  • One plus years of experience working in a research lab, either as an undergraduate or in a research position after graduation, is required. Masters degree is a plus.
  • Experience working with mice in a laboratory setting is appreciated but not essential.
  • Person must be reliable, pay attention to details, meticulous in record keeping, capable of working independently, possess superior verbal and written communication skills and work well as part of a team.
