Position:  Foster Parent- Chicago Village
At SOS Children’s Villages Illinois, we are committed to providing safe, stable, and loving homes for children in Foster Care. We do this by keeping brothers and sisters together in an individual home in the care of a full-time, professional Foster Parent. Our innovative approach to traditional Foster Care is redefining our communities. More specifically, the Auburn Gresham neighborhood of Chicago.
Our Chicago Village is a hidden gem in the South Side of Chicago. Established in 2004, we are the first urban village in the entire world. Our Chicago Village offers educational and recreational programs for Village residents and community members. This highly supportive setting provides children a sense of safety, security, and community.
As a Village, we work hard to bring in dedicated individuals willing and able to provide opportunity and vision for our youth in a loving and nurturing home environment. Our professional Foster Parents are mission driven individuals committed to preserving the spirit of community. Together, we understand that rebuilding a community begins with our children.

1. Willingness to relocate and live in a Village setting.

2. Provide a healthy, clean, safe, secure, nurturing, and loving home environment for the children.

3. Develop and implement individual progress plans for each child in conjunction with the children’s Case Manager.

4. Ensure that the children receive proper medical, dental and emotional care.

5. Ensure the educational growth of the children by having a pro-active attitude and response which entails an active participation in school, setting expectations for attendance, evaluating performance, and encouraging enrichment programs. As well as, advocating for the children’s needs and willingness to serve as a surrogate parent for special education needs.

6. Ensure the children’s participation in mental health services as required.

7. Attend court, Administrative Case Reviews, visitations with biological and potential adoptive parents, and all related conferences as required.

8. Maintain timely and accurate records of household budget, children's progress records, health records, and periodic evaluations.

9. Participate in on-going trainings and maintain current certifications such as first aid and CPR, TCI, Med. Administration, etc.

10. Transporting children as needed, i.e., sibling visits, doctor visits, therapy groups, etc.

11. Represent SOS Illinois in a professional manner to the public and guests.

12. Administer and manage all prescribed medications as needed. Complete all required documentation related to medical incidents/reports as required by SOS Illinois and DCFS.

13. Comply with all SOS Illinois policies, state, federal, county and city laws, rules and regulations.

14. Participate in Monthly Supervision with the Director of Programs and Services.

15. Maintain communication streams by ensuring s are read on a daily basis, provided cell phone is charged and readily available, and voics are being checked.

16. Maintain an attitude of respect and understanding towards the parents of the children because these people are important to the children.

Skills and Qualification:

SOS Illinois is looking for mission driven and nurturing individuals, domestic partners, or married couples interested in being a part of the solution, who are:

1. Experienced with children, either as parent or by working with children in another environment.

2. Experience supporting the needs of behaviorally complex children with a history of mental, emotional, or physical trauma is preferred, but not required (training is provided).

3. Able to discipline fairly and willing to learn behavior- management skills.

4. The skill set to manage a household and a budget.

5. Self-sufficient thinkers with a collaborative spirit and positive outlook on life.

6. Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a clean driving record.

7. DCFS (Department of Children and Family Services) background and medical clearance.

8. Ability to work in an alcohol, tobacco and drug-free environment.

9. Must be at least 25 years of age.

10. Must have a high school diploma equivalent, or higher.

11. If applicable, must ad to the policy of bringing only one biological or adopted child (under the age of 18) into the Village home.

12. Must be willing to commit to a minimum of 2 years of service.

Resourcefulness: SOS Illinois provides our Foster Parents with a community of resources. We are looking for Foster Parents who will utilize those resources, are capable of thinking on their feet, and will seek help when needed.

Most importantly, SOS Illinois Foster Parents are ready to make a full-time commitment to providing a loving, safe, and secure home for the children in their care.
