Title: PYP Music Teacher and Student Orchestra

Reports to: Director of Lower and Middle School

Job Type: Full-Time, On-Site Position

Dates: August 10, 2026–June 11, 2027

Work Days/Hours: Monday–Wednesday and Friday, 7:30 AM–3:15 PM;
Thursday, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM (includes staff meetings/professional development)

Required: Professional experience in music performance/education; demonstrated proficiency in vocal and/or instrumental instruction; experience teaching music to children and/or adolescents; basic piano/keyboard proficiency for accompanying and instruction; familiarity with general music curriculum and age-appropriate pedagogy

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in music or a related field

Job SummaryThe PYP Music Teacher and Student Orchestra plans and delivers a comprehensive, engaging music program for students in a faith-based school community. This role encompasses general music instruction and coordination of school-wide musical events. The Music teacher integrates faith into all teaching responsibilities and works collaboratively with faculty and staff to enrich the academic, spiritual, and cultural life of Daystar Academy.

The PYP Music teacher is positioned to develop a student orchestra in collaboration with the Director of Lower and Middle School.

All Staff Responsibilities
  • Provide a safe school environment—indoors and out—per directives regarding building operations (keys, fobs, alarm codes), the Daystar Distinctives, and Responsive Classroom practices.
  • Participate in a brief staff prayer at 7:35 AM, Monday through Thursday, in the Gathering Place.
  • Complete assigned arrival duties.
  • Fulfill essential job functions based on one’s specific job description; and during times of school drills or emergencies, assist others as able.
  • Be punctual, appropriately dressed, and prepared for work on assigned days and times.
  • Model positive and respectful interactions with students and all members of the Daystar community at all times.
  • Be an excellent ambassador of Daystar Academy at all times.
  • Respect all school procedures and chain of command.
  • Adhere to all requirements outlined in the Staff Handbook and comply with school policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality about children, their families, and other employees.
Music Teacher Responsibilities
General
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all students at all times.
  • Promptly communicate to the appropriate Lead Teacher any observations or concerns regarding students’ academic progress, social interactions, or behavior.
  • Refer all parent questions and concerns to the Lead Teacher or Director.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff using effective problem-solving, clear communication, flexibility, and encouragement.
  • Support and implement the Responsive Classroom management philosophy and practices.
  • Prepare instructional materials for music classes, choir classes, and chapel.
  • Organize and lead program events related to student learning and music theory acquisition.
  • Integrate faith into all teaching responsibilities in alignment with Daystar’s mission and Statement of Faith.

Instructional Duties
  • Teach general music to Kindergarten through 5th grade, including instruction in harmony, music appreciation, music history, and ensemble performance.
  • Use a diverse repertoire of age- and skill-appropriate music, including traditional, faith-based, and contemporary works.
  • Plan, rehearse, and direct students in two annual musical performances:
    Christmas Showcase and PYP Spring Concert.
  • Differentiate music instruction to accommodate individual learning needs and the diverse needs of the student body.
  • Develop a well-balanced music program and effectively manage class time to ensure preparation, instruction, and rehearsal objectives are met.
  • Establish and maintain high standards of student behavior to ensure a focused and respectful learning environment during instruction, rehearsals, and performances.
  • Assess each student’s musical growth and their contribution to group performance, ensuring all students are included and valued.
  • Maintain and care for school-owned musical instruments, equipment, and music materials to prevent damage or loss.
