- Answer inquiries via phone, email, and in‑person requests.
An Ophthalmic Technician assists an Ophthalmologist by providing excellent patient care and performing initial testing necessary for an exam.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide exceptional customer service during every patient encounter (in person or via phone).
- Display a professional attitude, greet patients promptly, and thank them when they leave.
- Anticipate Physician needs to facilitate clinic flow.
- Practice urgency with patients’ and doctor’s time and schedule.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures, including HIPAA.
- Verify patient information by interviewing patients.
- Record patient’s medical history, current medications, and purpose of visit.
- Record all data in the patient’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Check eye condition by observing pupils, muscles, visual acuity, and extraocular movements.
- Perform diagnostic tests such as dilation, refraction, pressure, visual fields, OCT, GDX, IOL master, auto refractor, and topography.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of eye anatomy, diseases, symptoms, and ocular medications.
- Accurately document medical visits and procedures performed by the Physician.
- Prepare patients for treatments and minor procedures; measure and record vital signs as required.
- Open and close exam rooms as needed.
- Keep examination, treatment, laser, and other assigned rooms clean, stocked, and drug counts up to date.
- Perform general office duties and cleaning as directed by the manager.
- Excellent patient care with an energetic and empathetic demeanor.
- Compliance with HIPAA confidentiality standards.
- Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate with all levels of staff politely and professionally. Organizational skills with focus on tracking patient care and improving patient flow.
- Desire to gain industry knowledge and training.

High School Diploma or GED. - Minimum required:
One year of related experience, training, or equivalent education and experience.
- Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification preferred but not required.

- Requires frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%) and standing (50%).
- Regular bending, stooping and reaching (25‑50%).
- Lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs.
- Strong fine motor skills; constant grasping, writing/typing, technology use.
- Visual and auditory acuity—including color, depth, peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus—100 % of the time.
- Occasional driving or climbing as necessary.
