SMCS is seeking to hire for the following position beginning fall of 2026.

Position:
Full-time Special Education Teacher

Job Description:

Provide individualized instruction to children with mild to moderate disabilities in a Montessori mixed-age classroom. Duties include identifying, coordinating and conducting the MTSS process for children with special needs in all three tiers. Participate in developing Individualized Education Plans (IEP) for qualifying students, set personalized and challenging goals for each student, communicate with parents, school administrators and teachers about the child’s progress.

Support and collaboratively plan the adaptation of the curriculum and teaching techniques to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Observe and analyze student work, ensure appropriate accommodations, modify and plan appropriate instruction to meet student needs. Maintain a record-keeping system to track student progress. Invest in families by building and maintaining positive relationships with parents. Supervise students and ensure their safety.

Submit student progress reports, IEPs and other required paperwork on time. Fulfill other duties as assigned. This is a full time position—approximately 40 hours per week.

Qualifications:

Commitment to and willingness to utilize the Montessori philosophy

Highly Qualified Special Education Certification (State teaching license not required).

Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree

Flexibility in working with a large range of special education needs

Commitment to building long-term relationships with students, parents, and colleagues

Desire to learn and grow as a teacher; openness to feedback, collaboration, and compromise

Preferred: 3+ years’ experience in Special Needs

Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for supervision and follow through of the special education process from screening through assessment, identification, IEP development, and assisting in providing appropriate identification and placement of students with disabilities. Implement all aspects the Individuals with Disabilities Act, (IDEA) in accordance with district, state, and federal policies and procedures Design and deliver instruction in alignment with IEP goals Supervise and coordinate special education programs, policies and diagnostic procedures in response to individual student needs Organize and ensure completion of all evaluation reports and IEPs Complete reviews of all special education IEP documents, ensuring compliance with District procedures, state, and federal laws Initiate screening of transfer and new referral records and contact previous school district to obtain necessary information on new students Perform and monitor evaluation and timelines to ensure appropriate student placement and programming Work with principals, teachers, and other team members to facilitate optimal inclusion of all students into regular classes as appropriate Regularly monitor and report student progress toward IEP goals Communicate regularly with families about student progress Maintain records about IEP service delivery

* APPLICANTS MUST HAVE: desire to work in an elementary Montessori environment experience working in a K-8th grade public school setting ability to maintain confidentiality and whole-child views of children and families served desire to work using a multi-disciplinary team approach an active initial or professional K-12 special education license knowledge of the Special Education process and laws excellent organizational skills, oral and written skills, and time management skills experience using assessment protocols.

Full Time Salary Starting at, $50,000 experience dependent
