Systems Engineer, Data Science Manager
Overview
The Data Center Engineering (DCE) Team is the engineering owner for the lifecycle of AWS data centers. This includes supporting new designs/innovations through data center end-of-life, with a focus on root cause analysis of failures, capacity and availability improvement, and optimization of the existing fleet.
As a Physical Security Engineer - Resilience & Protection, you are an exceptionally strong communicator, both written and verbally. You will lead multi-discipline and highly technical program teams focused on physical security engineering, site hardening, and infrastructure protection for AWS data centers globally. You will have experience working in a complex engineering environment and will have worked as a technical project manager on increasingly complex security engineering projects.
Your experience includes physical security infrastructure technologies including, physical protective design, and electronic security systems integration. You will generate and maintain enhanced reporting, meaningful KPIs, and process/automation improvements to ensure team efficiency and visibility of the portfolio efforts to critical stakeholders and leadership.
You will partner with external security consultants, intelligence teams, engineering teams, operations staff, and project execution/delivery teams regularly. You will make strategic decisions regarding specific security engineering projects and overall program direction. You will be capable of connecting long-term protective design strategies with the rapid growth patterns of AWS, as well as guide specific operational needs of the business related to infrastructure protection.
You must be adept at identifying and communicating upcoming risks, threats, and vulnerabilities as well as be instrumental in resolving those issues, often crossing multiple departmental and international boundaries to achieve your goal. You must possess a strong sense of organization, communication, and team building skill-sets that foster robust working relationships for both internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities- Own the security design library including Basis of Design (BOD) documents, specifications, and design templates; drive cross-discipline coordination with mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering teams to ensure security impacts are reflected in their design packages.
- Lead and update physical security design portion of programs including data center cross-discipline value engineering, fast paced building changes, security device optimization, blast analysis, quantitative threat assessments, and structural vulnerability evaluations across global data center locations.
- Manage relationships with external security consultants on protective design solutions including blast-proof materials, shelter requirements, and mitigation strategies required for design.
- Develop cost-benefit analyses showing protection levels against different threat types to enable informed business decisions for leadership.
- Prepare narratives for executive leadership with recommendations which articulate decision points relative to cost, timing, and strategic trade‑offs for security hardening investments during design analysis.
- Create strong end‑to‑end team processes and mechanisms that include training and validation of success through metrics‑based criteria.
- Manage global program ownership for security engineering processes and strategic initiatives that encompass all engineering disciplines.
- Interface with international teams across multiple time zones to coordinate design impacts based on threat assessments, consultant engagements, and mitigation implementations.
- Possess strong engineering judgement and are able to provide recommendations despite uncertainty.
- Are detail and data oriented.
- Have experience managing security engineering projects.
- Build trust and relationships with different stakeholders (e.g., Operations, Security, Intelligence, Construction, and Design Engineering).
- Can interpret and communicate complex technical security data including blast pressure calculations, fragment analysis, and material resistance evaluations.
