Utility Plant Operator I

What You Can ExpectAs a Utility Plant Operator I, you will play a key role in ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of campus utility systems. Under the guidance of senior operators, you will monitor, operate, and support all ENGIE‑operated utility plants and associated systems on campus. You'll work with a wide range of equipment, including boilers, turbines, chillers, emergency generators, air compressors, pumps, motors, and water treatment systems.
This role involves hands‑on operations, troubleshooting, routine maintenance, and maintaining accurate logs and records, all while upholding strict safety and environmental standards.
This position follows a 12‑hour fixed shift schedule. Operators are assigned to either day shift (6:00 AM – 6:00 PM) or night shift (6:00 PM – 6:00 AM) and remain on that shift. No swing shifts.
This position follows a 2‑2‑3 schedule:
Week 1 – Work 2 days, off 2 days, work 3 days
Week 2 – Off 2 days, work 2 days, off 3 days
This cycle repeats every two weeks and includes every other weekend off as a three‑day weekend. Availability for occasional emergency call‑ins is required.
This position also includes training to obtain the State of Ohio Stationary Steam Engineer's License within 12‑18 months. Upon successful completion, employees are eligible for promotion to Utility Plant Operator II, along with a pay increase to $38.80/hour.
Responsibilities- Monitor plant systems, take readings, and adjust operations to maintain performance and efficiency
- Respond to alarms and changing system conditions
- Perform equipment inspections and basic troubleshooting
- Execute equipment startup, shutdown, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures
- Operate boilers, turbines, chillers, generators, and associated utility systems
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of plant equipment and work areas
- Communicate effectively with incoming shifts to ensure continuity of operations
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
- This role requires attendance at a worksite on a daily basis
- Must possess a valid U.S. driver's license/will drive a company vehicle
- Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
- This position consists of 10% of outdoor work, while performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions
- Ability to maintain consistent attendance and punctuality to support safe and efficient operations
Hourly: $24.38 – $37.32 USD (average expected pay range for a qualified candidate).
