Job Description Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Area Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for assisting in the maintenance of contracted assets (roadways, vegetation, etc.) as directed by the Area Supervisor.

The pay range for this position is $25–$27 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Removal of snow and ice by using snow removal equipment
  • Assist with loading and unloading of winter materials
  • Maintain highway and other surfaces by removal of litter and debris
  • Operate vehicles and equipment as required for surface and right-of-way maintenance to control vegetation appearance and growth
As Required
  • May assist with traffic control setup and removal
  • Transport crew and equipment to work sites
  • Required to be available for emergency response as needed for overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Willing to travel
  • All other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing with co-workers and supervisor
  • Perform basic mathematical functions
  • Consistently follow all policies and procedures
  • Understand written, oral, or diagram instructions and interpret documents such as safety rules and operating instructions
  • Capable of working in an environment with rapid demand and priority changes
  • Work with hand and power tools, traffic control devices and mobile equipment such as tractors, graders, mowers, sweepers, augers and other equipment used for surface and right-of-way maintenance and repair
  • Highly developed sense of safety awareness and perceptive ability
  • Ability to recognize hazards inherent in routine and non-routine tasks and make adjustments to avoid loss, injury or accident
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers safety instructions
  • Ability to think clearly and focus on safety while using tools and equipment, while driving or operating equipment
  • Will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the job
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 1-year work experience in construction, road maintenance, commercial/industrial repair, maintenance or landscaping (outdoor work)
  • Experience in operating a loader (asset)
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • Successful completion of training in traffic control methods, first aid, transportation of dangerous goods, WHMIS and job-related aspects of Occupational Health
Work Conditions / Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to stand; sit; walk on a wide range of surfaces; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted, use manual and powered pneumatic, hydraulic, gas, and electric powered tools and equipment. Vision includes close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely exposed to outside weather conditions including extreme heat and cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high precarious places; fume or airborne particles. Frequent exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, insects and occasionally reptiles/rodents. Noise level usually moderate but on occasions can be more than moderate.
