Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill five part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Summer Events Specialist positions for Recreational Sports at Oregon State University (OSU).

Special Events Team (SET) Specialists work as paraprofessional staff representing the operations professional team and other department administrators in Rec Sports. SET staff have a high level of responsibility to ensure that all programs and facilities operate according to department risk management standards and program/area-specific policies, guidelines, and expectations. Additionally, all Rec Sports employees are responsible for facilitating a fun, safe, and welcoming environment for participants and staff members at all times.

Special Events Team Members report directly to the Scheduling and Events Coordinator and Senior Events Associate.

Anticipated Hourly Rate: $16.76

Position Duties

  • Participate in required training sessions at Dixon Recreation Center (September).
  • Submit availability for Nike camps, Varsity Spirit Cheer camps, and Special Olympics State Games.
  • Demonstrate reliability, adaptability, and professionalism across varying event schedules.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by the Scheduling and Events Coordinator or Senior Events Associate.

Communication

  • Support event customers by answering questions, addressing concerns, and mediating conflicts; escalate issues to a supervisor when necessary.
  • Collaborate with vendors before, during, and after events to ensure smooth operations and compliance with facility standards.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with supervisors, teammates, participants, and spectators.

Critical Thinking

  • Monitor crowd flow, safety conditions, and facility use to prevent disruptions and respond to potential risks.
  • Assess situations during events and take appropriate action to ensure uninterrupted safety.
  • Apply judgment when enforcing DRS policies and handling customer or vendor concerns.

Equity & Inclusion

  • Provide crowd control and customer support in a respectful, inclusive manner for all participants, spectators, and staff.

Leadership

  • Take initiative during event setup, operations, and takedown to ensure facilities are prepared and maintained.
  • Serve as a responsible on-site representative of DRS by enforcing policies and modeling professional behavior.
  • Assist with conflict resolution and contribute to a positive event environment.

Professionalism

  • Enforce all DRS policies and regulations consistently and responsibly.
  • Monitor items entering and exiting the facility to maintain security and accountability.
