The Mechanical Engineer supports the planning, design, and construction management of RTD’s infrastructure projects, with a primary focus on mechanical and HVAC systems. Projects may also include piping, plumbing, electrical systems, utilities, and related equipment, and involve repairs, reconstruction, new construction, and modernization of facilities and infrastructure.
Duties and Responsibilities:Competency
- Manages construction activities, including coordination with contractors, design teams, tenants, and internal stakeholders.
- Coordinates design efforts, including in-house design and oversight of contracted design services.
- Conducts inspections, reviews inspection reports, and oversees third‑party inspections.
- CConducts contractor negotiations, develops cost estimates, and ensures compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Ensures all required permits and approvals are obtained prior to the start of construction. Interfaces and coordinates with city staff, local businesses, utility companies, internal departments, and other entities that are directly impacted by a project.

Qualifications:Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in mechanical design and/or mechanical project management with construction experience in light industrial and/or commercial facilities.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Colorado.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends as required to support project needs.
- Possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license and a motor vehicle record that meets RTD driving standards.
- Working knowledge of mechanical design and construction practices, including cost estimating, interpretation of technical drawings and specifications, and project cost management.
- Experience working in a public agency, transit, or highly regulated environment.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Key Competencies & Characteristics:- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems (e.g., HVAC, piping, plumbing) and related construction practices.
- Knowledge of critical path method (CPM) scheduling software and ability to interpret and analyze related data.
- Ability to develop cost estimates using current labor rates and material pricing.
- Ability to develop, read, and interpret complex mechanical drawings, plans, specifications, and technical documents.
- Ability to negotiate and manage contractor relationships.
- Knowledge of capital and expense budgeting, including forecasting and tracking project costs.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and make informed decisions.
- Ability to identify alternative solutions, make recommendations, and present them in an easily understood manner.
- Strong time and workload management skills, including planning, organizing, and prioritizing assignments with attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate specialized information effectively to diverse audiences.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, external partners, and regulatory agencies.
