Loon is on a mission to connect people everywhere by inventing and integrating audacious technology. Loon is built on a sophisticated system of products and services that combine advancements in materials science, atmospheric modeling, machine learning, and communications systems. These platforms enable Loon to harness the stratosphere, transforming global connectivity and creating endless possibilities for new applications by bridging ground, sky and space.
Using high altitude platforms to support communications payloads presents unique mechanical engineering challenges. Designing lightweight, stable systems that withstand movement, rotation, vibration, and extreme thermal environments requires a particular skill set. In this role you will work side-by-side with controls systems and manufacturing engineers to develop electro-mechanical systems for Loons next generation flight systems. The ideal Mechanical Design Engineer will be a self-starter that thrives on design freedom, is comfortable with ambiguity, and enjoys conceptualizing, designing, prototyping, and testing hardware with a small dynamic team. You'll bring expertise in SolidWorks modeling with PDM and be passionate about our mission to connect the unconnected.
ResponsibilitiesDesign of complex electro-mechanical assemblies in extreme thermal environments Perform Electronics packaging, cable routing, finite-element and modal analysis Construct analytical models and correlate them with real-world testing, including design, set up, and execution of tests for electro-mechanical systems Evaluate performance of and troubleshoot existing designs
Minimum QualificationsBachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Experience with electro-mechanical sensor, actuator selection and sizing and Solidworks Solid product design experience for CNC machining, sheet metal fab, injection molding, and die casting Hands on practical experience with designing agile, light-weight, and compact electro-mechanical mechanisms
Preferred QualificationsMasters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, with relevant experience Expertise in finite-element analysis to evaluate thermally-induced stresses and structural modes Hands on experience with environmental testing infrastructure (e.g. thermal chambers, shaker tables etc.) Familiarity with tooling and processes for low/mid volume production of hardware Experience with a variety of materials and manufacturing processes (e.g. injection molding, composite lamination, 3D printing, bonded and mechanical joints, etc.)
