Position Title: Transportation Generalist
Agency: Transportation Department
Location: Various (Owatonna Truck Station / Owatonna Sign Shop)
Salary: $24.76 - $31.06 hourly; $51,698 - $64,853 annually
Full/Part Time: Full-Time
Work Shift: Day Shift (Summer:
Monday‑Thursday 6:30 am‑4:30 pm, Friday 6:00 am‑10:00 am; Winter: Monday‑Friday 7:00 am‑3:30 pm or snow‑and‑ice shifts)

Responsibilities- Road Surface/Roadway Maintenance
- Perform all activities required for roadside maintenance
- Perform all roadway surface maintenance activities
- Service and make minor repairs to operating equipment
- Provide traffic control
- Perform basic construction monitoring duties and basic inspection activities
- Other duties as required
- Sign Maintenance
- Install, repair, and remove permanent signs and messages
- Install emergency and temporary signage on detours, construction projects, and other emergency projects
- Install message painting/taping
- Stake sign locations and conduct Gopher One Calls
- Conduct field sign inspections
- Determine proper traffic control layout and perform traffic control
- Maintain a history of signs using a sign management system
- Track sign inventory so that signs are ordered and material is on hand
- Perform winter maintenance activities related to snow and ice operations
- Operate and perform maintenance and minor repairs on equipment
- Snow and Ice
- Maintain roadways for snow and ice control
- Prepare and inspect winter equipment
- Perform preseason snow route inspection and post‑storm cleanup
- Perform winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti‑icing and de‑icing chemicals
- Perform all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences; replacing mailboxes
- Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management
- Perform traffic control set‑ups and/or provide notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles
- Must possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with no Air Brake Restriction and obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with no Air Brake Restriction and Tanker Endorsement within five months of placement into the position
- One year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, landscaping, operating heavy equipment or farm experience)
- Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience (transcripts must be submitted)
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in‑person or via two‑way radio and other electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records
- Drug and alcohol testing will be required before and during employment
- All candidates must submit to a background investigation prior to employment (SEMA4 Records Check, Criminal History Check, Employment Reference Check, Education/License Verification, Driver’s License Check)
- Commercial Driver’s License holders must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Commercial Driver’s License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and pass a drug test
- Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one hour of being called during snow and ice operations
