Summer Highway Maintenance

Salary Range $15.00 to $22.66

Job Summary:
Maintains Renville County highways, bridges and rural roads, and rights-of-way in safe condition.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other responsibilities and duties may be assigned.

Roadside vegetation control with tractor mower and sprayer.

Erects and repairs guardrails, highway markers, and snow fences.

Seal coating, involves brooming with a power broom prior to applying liquid bituminous with distributor, applying cover aggregate with chip spreader and then rolling with pneumatic roller.

Drives truck to transport crew and equipment to work site.

Drives tractor with mower attachment for grass, weed, and brush control; and maintains equipment.

Picking up litter along roads

Operates jackhammer and tamper

Assist with weed spraying

Patching bituminous roads using rakes, shovels and rollers; and operation of trailer hot material box.

Upkeep of various County Shops and grounds.

Crack filling and sealing consisting of pouring liquid asphaltic filler into the cracks.

Extremely flammable, danger of explosion.

Tree cutting and brush control along County roads using chainsaws, wood chipper and trucks.

Traffic control during maintenance operation, consisting of flagging and placing, moving and removing signs and barricades.

Job Relationships

Internal Interactions With: Landfill personnel-hauling fill, weed and brush control;
Parks personnel – weed and brush control;
Auditor’s office – County Ditches and County Property;
Sheriff’s office- emergency situations.

External Interactions With: City and Township officials-weed and brush control;
General Public-answer questions, explain roadwork, listen to comments from public. Frequent complaints and conflicting demands on time and worker required.

Education and/or

Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or two to four years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Class D driver’s license

Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical and Computer

Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and judge depth and density.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to use independent judgment to analyze a variety of changing conditions and determine the course of action necessary to continue, complete or initiate a wide range of work assignments.

Skills and Abilities:

Heavy Equipment Experience, preferred. Ability to operate the equipment described under the duties of the position. Ability to manage own properties and schedule in area of responsibility, or assigned geographic area. Ability to deal with confrontations with irate citizens with calmness. Very visible to public and must be capable of effective interactions with members of the public.
