Skills Needed: IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:
Knowledge of:
Basic housekeeping methods.
Developmentally appropriate practices with children.
Objective observations of children.

Ability to:
Communicate orally and in writing for the purpose of providing and obtaining information.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Perform simple routine clerical duties.
Operate simple office machines.

Skills Needed: Education:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency and a minimum of 12 college units in human services, family relations, social work, or related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience:
Two years of experience with a Head Start program as a parent, volunteer or employee.

Special:
Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination. Possession of a valid California Class C Driver license.
Evidence of adequate insurance for a motor vehicle, which meets or exceeds the California legal liability insurance requirement and continue to maintain insurability.
Use of an automobile.

Optional Second Language Requirement: Some positions in this classification require the ability to speak, read, and write a second language in addition to English, and may require bilingual proficiency for which selective certification may apply (Education Code 45277).

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires public schools to be in compliance when hiring paraprofessionals for classroom instruction. The following additional requirements are:

Possession of high school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent AND ONE of the following:
A minimum of 48 semester or 72 quarter units of college coursework
An Associate's or higher degree
Pass an assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching, reading, writing and mathematics.

Experience:
One year of paid or volunteer experience within an educational or child care setting, preferably serving special education students.

Physical Requirement:
Successfully complete a physical examination. Absence of back problems or any other physical impairments that might preclude the performance of physical labor or lifting.
