Overview

Job Description – Traffic Systems Technician I or II (2601157) – The TxDOT El Paso District seeks a technician who works outdoors, troubleshoots electronic and electrical systems, and maintains traffic control equipment. Positions range from Technician I to Technician II with corresponding salary bands.

Responsibilities
  • Install, maintain, modify, test, troubleshoot, and repair traffic control, communication, illumination, and data collection systems.
  • Operate and service equipment such as bucket trucks, drilling rigs, concrete saws, trenching machines, cable locating instruments, insulation testers, and 18‑wheel calibration trucks.
  • Assist in inspecting construction methods and maintenance procedures to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Respond to emergencies to restore traffic signals, lighting, or data collection equipment.
  • Assist in installing and maintaining hardware and software for Intelligent Transportation Systems and the Statewide Traffic Analysis and Reporting System.
  • Maintain stock and equipment to ensure necessary tools and materials are available for scheduled projects.
  • Install, troubleshoot and maintain cameras, LED and fiber‑optic signs, cabling, and communication modems.
  • Move and place traffic control devices such as barricades and cones.
  • Assist in designing and reviewing traffic signal, data collection, and illumination projects (Technician II only).
  • Assist in developing recommendations for long‑term traffic signal timing and congestion solutions (Technician II only).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education
  • High‑school graduate or equivalent in general education.
Experience
  • Technician I:
    None required; experience may be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time employment.
  • Technician II:
    One year of construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical installation, traffic management, transportation engineering, or related experience.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license; position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Commercial Class A driver’s license or obtained a CDL A within 120 days of employment.
Abilities & Knowledge
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and safety procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of construction equipment operations, traffic control equipment, the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, electrical construction procedures, and operating electronic test equipment.
  • Some knowledge of digital data communications, closed‑circuit television systems, and maintenance of hand and power tools.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Outdoor work under varied weather conditions; no effective protection.
  • Exposure to extreme cold (100°F) for extended periods.
  • Exposure to noise, moving vehicles, hazardous materials, high places, and chemical handling.
  • Required to wear protective gear such as respirator, hard hat, or other devices.
  • Medium‑level lifting: up to 50 lbs at a time; frequent lifting of 25 lbs items.
  • Walking, standing, and crouching on uneven surfaces.
  • Long‑distance travel across the state; availability for emergencies on a 24‑hour basis.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 1 hour of notification on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
