SUMMARYThis position is responsible for overseeing the work of others and installing and repairing pipes, fittings, and fixtures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Study building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installations.
- Inspect structure to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of the structure from pipe installation.
- Locate and mark positions of pipe, pipe connections, and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors, using ruler, spirit level, and plumb bob.
- Cut openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings, using hand tools and power tools.
- Cut and thread pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and pipe‑threading machine; bend pipe to required angles using various tools.
- Perform maintenance, repair, and installation of plumbing fixtures, components, and systems, including steam systems, water distribution systems, and sewage collection systems, and maintain valves, traps, filters, pumps, hydraulic flow meters, lift stations, and other equipment.
- Set up schedules and ensure appropriate coverage for shifts and assignments.
- Monitor work and advise supervisor and/or management of workforce changes that may affect completion of assigned work.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested.
- High School Diploma or equivalent GED plus a minimum of four (4) years of journeyman plumber experience.
- Previous supervisory or lead work experience preferred.
- Texas Journeyman Plumbing License.
- Ability to obtain security clearance for use of government computer.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License and ability to maintain DHS Facility access.
- At least three (3) years’ experience performing operation, repair, and maintenance of high‑pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heat and steam generation systems.
- Ability to install, repair, and maintain various supply, disposal, and utility systems, including potable water, sewer, gas systems, and water closets, along with valves, regulators, and pressure‑controlling devices.
- Ability to interpret and apply building plans and blueprints.
- Experience performing preventative maintenance on equipment and machinery.
- Experience responding to and completing repairs on maintenance work orders.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in construction or repair of plumbing pipes and fixtures.
- Knowledge of safety procedures.
- Motor coordination and manual dexterity.
- Ability to establish priorities and organize work.
- Skill in training and instructing others.
- Public and interpersonal relations skills.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Basic arithmetic proficiency.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, managers, and staff. Ability to write reports and effectively present information to managers, employees, and customers. Ability to oversee the work of others.
REASONING ABILITYMust be able to read and interpret various information to ensure procedures are followed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSFrequent standing, walking, sitting, hand use, reaching, and talking. Occasional climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Can lift over 50 pounds. Requires good vision and the ability to adjust focus.
