Position: Optical Transport Operations Engineer 2

Job Summary

This operations‑focused technical role supports day‑to‑day transport network activities, including scheduled and emergency maintenances, change execution, and continuous monitoring of all transport services. The engineer works within the Ciena 6500 Backbone Transport network, supporting a large‑scale fiber optic infrastructure. Responsibilities include monitoring network health, responding to alarms and incidents, creating and executing changes, and assisting with service restorations. The role requires a solid understanding of optical transport technologies, strong operational discipline, and the ability to troubleshoot and support complex transport systems in a production environment.

Must

Have Technical Skills
  • Experience with network health monitoring, handling alarms, performing routine maintenance, and maintaining security configurations. Assist in troubleshooting down‑services in Ciena and Nokia environments, addressing potential issues early to prevent outages.
  • 2–3 years’ experience in Transport Engineering, Technician, or Technical role supporting transport service deployment or operations, preferably with DWDM networks.
  • Understanding of Ciena 6500 Photonic, OTN, Ethernet Networking and Data Communications (TCP/IP), RLS, Nokia PSS
    1830, NFMT.
  • Associates or bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, or related work experience.
Must Have Soft Skills
  • Team collaboration and close work with senior team members to share insights and support team goals.
  • Operational support in high‑pressure situations, contributing to decision‑making processes and restoring network operations quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations during maintenance windows and solve complex technical problems under time constraints.
  • Self‑motivated with a team and customer focus.
  • Excellent customer service interaction skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Nice to Have Skills
  • Professional problem‑solving experience, evaluating designs and circuit identification for complex troubleshooting.
  • Ability to make timely and accurate assessments of complex situations.
  • Knowledge of Layer 2 protocols will be an advantage.
Ticket Examples
  • Incident tickets for service‑impacting issues, tracking outages, alarms, degradations, and restoration efforts.
  • Work order tasks for physical or field work, coordinating dispatches, equipment checks, fiber validation, OTDR testing, and site‑level support.
  • Change tickets for planned or required maintenance, scheduling approved work, documenting risk, defining impact, and ensuring communication.
  • Break/Fix support for unexpected hardware, fiber, or transport path failures, investigating issues and driving repair actions.
  • Required maintenance tickets for planned corrective action to repair, replace, migrate, or optimize transport infrastructure.
  • RMA support tickets for equipment confirmed or suspected to be faulty, coordinating replacements with vendor‑approved parts.
  • Fiber support tickets to review light levels, span loss, alarms, OTDR results, identifying disturbances or damage along physical paths.
  • Hardware support tickets to validate shelf, card, optic, power, and module status, determining necessary repair, reseat, replacement, or escalation.
  • Vendor coordination tickets for third‑party support, including fiber repair, hardware replacement, and maintenance updates.
  • Maintenance validation checks to confirm alarms, light levels, circuit status, and service stability post‑work.

Salary

Base pay range: $78,505.90 – $ (New Jersey). Compensation will be within this range based on experience and other job‑related factors. Total rewards also include applicable bonuses and commissions for non‑sales positions.

Education

Bachelor's Degree preferred; work experience may be considered.

Relevant Work Experience

2–5 Years in transport engineering or related technical roles.
