NATURE OF WORK

The Public Works and Maintenance Technician‑Water I.II.III works under general supervision to perform a wide variety of semi‑skilled and skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s water system. Positions are flexibly staffed and normally filled by advancement from level I or, when filled from outside, require prior experience.

PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN‑WATER I

This is the entry‑level class; no prior directly related experience required. Employees perform a wide range of maintenance, repair, and construction tasks for water, stormwater, and street infrastructure, observed and reviewed throughout performance. After training, work is performed with limited supervision.

PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN‑WATER II

Mid‑level class with expectation of performing skilled and technical assignments related to water, stormwater, and street infrastructure. May oversee moderate projects, train less experienced technicians, and lead field Technician I’s when directed.

PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN‑WATER III

Advanced class with responsibility for skilled and technical assignments performed with minimal instructions. Oversee moderate to complex projects, train less experienced technicians, lead field Technician I’s and II’s when directed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Public Works Maintenance Technician‑Water I
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform all duties safely and satisfactorily, including municipal governance, teamwork, problem‑solving, relationship‑building, customer service, detail orientation, technology/equipment proficiency, policy adherence, time management, research and data analysis, decision‑making, self‑motivation, stewardship, integrity, and core values.
  • Proficient in listening, reading, understanding, and communicating in English orally and in writing (correspondence, reports, emails).
  • Timely attendance and effective communication for scheduling conflicts or leave.
  • Willing to learn job‑related skills and regulations.
  • Perform temporary traffic control and related safety functions at job sites.
  • Water pipeline maintenance, installation, repair, and replacement of service and main lines; water valves and fire hydrant maintenance; respond to breaks and leaks.
  • Read water meters, record consumption, identify addresses for new meters, activate/deactivate meters, inventory equipment, and perform installations and change‑outs.
  • General maintenance including rough carpentry, pipe fitting, fence/guardrail installation and repair, painting, plumbing, and basic electrical work.
  • Assist with concrete and wood forms, mixing, setting, troweling, and finishing.
  • Routine service and maintenance on motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists with city snow removal.
  • Operate construction and maintenance vehicles such as mowers, tractors, excavators, pickups, dump trucks with plows, snowplows, street sweepers, backhoes, jet/vac trucks, front‑end loaders, skid steer loaders, motor graders.
  • Use air compressors, pneumatic tools, chain saws, bush cutters, jackhammers, tampers, concrete saws, pressure washers, hand tools, wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels, rollers.
  • Perform minor routine maintenance and inspections on equipment.
  • Inspect ditch system facilities for damage, leaks, vandalism; maintain raw water ditch system; clean debris and litter; perform landscape maintenance within right‑of‑way areas.
  • Repair and maintain headgates, dams, pipelines; install and maintain flumes, meters, gauges; record flow readings.
  • Locate city utility lines.
  • Operate and maintain non‑potable irrigation pump stations.
  • On occasional 24‑hour rotating on‑call status as scheduled.
  • Assigned to special city events such as trash cleanup.
  • Apply herbicides and pesticides per laws and regulations, with required PPE.
