The FSU Reading Clinic provides the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based literacy instruction to K-5 students after school and/or during summer camp. Licensed educators mentor and supervise student tutors enrolled in teacher preparation programs ensuring instructional fidelity, data-driven decision-making, and meaningful family engagement aligned with Title III goals.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
Student Reading Clinic Tutors provide support and tutoring, gain clinical practice, and lead parent workshops. Student workers serve as tutors and must meet minimum academic and training requirements, complete all required background and safety training, and work under the supervision of licensed educators to deliver high-quality, evidence-based literacy instruction and tutoring to K-5 students after school and/or during summer camp. Student Reading Clinic Tutors provide instructional tutoring and support the development and facilitation of parent workshops.
Minimum
Education and Experience Requirements:
Students hired as tutors must be an undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing. They must meet minimum academic and training requirements, complete all required background and safety training, and work under the supervision of licensed educators. Student Reading Clinic Tutors must be able to assist with instructional tutoring and support the development and facilitation of parent workshops and with design and delivery of instruction with some mentoring and guidance.
Knowledge skills and abilities:
* Have the ability to commit to:
Consistent weekly hours (5:00 p.m.
- 7:00 p.m.
- Tuesday and Thursdays 4 hours each week). Attend scheduled tutoring sessions and required trainings. Being punctual and reliable
* Have familiarity with: literacy assessment tools, educational technology platforms, have an interest in teaching, counseling, or education-related careers, and experience working with children
* Have a basic understanding of: child development and learning, foundational literacy skills (phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension)
* Have the ability to: follow structured lesson plans, deliver one-on-one or small-group instruction, and use instructional materials as designed
* Commit to completing program-provided training in: tutoring protocols and expectations, child safety and professionalism, and confidentiality (e.g., FERPA-like expectations)
* Have clear written and oral communication skills and the ability and willingness to: explain instructional strategies in family-friendly language, collaborate with faculty, staff, and licensed teachers, assist in developing handouts, slides, or activities for parents, and support workshops (setup, facilitation support, follow-up materials)
Preferred Qualifications:
* Previous tutoring experience is preferred, but not required.
