Texas Workforce Commission connects people with careers across the state. We are based in Austin on the north lawn of the Texas State Capitol, with offices statewide. This position is located at 301 W 13th St, Fort Worth, Texas, in the Fort Worth Tax department.

Applicants must be Texas residents or willing to relocate to Texas. This position is not open to individuals requiring sponsorship for an employment visa, including those currently on student or postgraduate visas.

We are looking for a candidate who has strong organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple priorities while meeting strict deadlines. A written exercise may be given at the interview stage.

What You Will Do

The Accounts Examiner IV performs highly complex (senior-level) accounts examination work. The role works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. May assist with special projects as needed.

You Will Be Trusted To

  • Instruct staff in the uniform application of tax laws, compliance with state statutes and department policies, and procedures.
  • Process, examine, edit, and update taxpayer/employer accounts; ensure appropriate action has been taken and entered into the tax processing systems; properly document actions and monitor accounts for completion.
  • Conduct audits and investigations of financial records, fiscal statements, and operating reports to ensure legal compliance, verify questionable reports, and establish tax liability.
  • Collect taxes, penalties, or fees due; verify validity of refund requests or over payments; and initiate issuance of refunds.
  • Analyze tax processing procedures and system development and production procedures and recommend appropriate changes.
  • Participate in planning and implementing specific enforcement and tax processing functions.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence and review reports for accuracy and conformance to departmental and legal requirements.
  • Provide taxpayers/employer guidance concerning department operations or regulations, legal requirements, and taxpayers'/employers’ rights, privileges, and responsibilities.
  • Testify at hearings and before courts of jurisdiction.
  • May establish and implement policies and procedures.
  • May prepare and verify legally acceptable affidavits and related documents used in prosecuting violators or collecting delinquent accounts.
  • May perform quality assurance work.
  • May supervise the work of others.
  • May assist with special projects as needed.
  • Perform related work as assigned.

You Qualify With

  • Four years of full‑time experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work.
  • Relevant academic credits may be applied toward experience qualifications for this position.

You Are a Great Fit With

  • 5 years of external accounting and auditing experience or full‑time in‑service TWC experience as an Accounts Examiner III is preferred.
  • Flexibility to assist with special projects as needed while still maintaining AE IV workload.
  • Knowledge of state tax laws, rules, and regulations including TUCA.
  • Knowledge of department policies, procedures, and interpretations.
  • Knowledge of accounting and auditing procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of skill in the use of a computer and applicable Tax Audit/COMPAS software.
  • Ability to analyze tax situations.
  • Ability to evaluate financial records.
  • Ability to prepare concise reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to testify at hearings and before courts as necessary.
  • Ability to assign and/or supervise the work of others.
