Position Summary  Working within plastics injection moulding, the Manufacturing Technical Lead serves as Ottawa Mould Craft Ltd.’s primary technical interface between customers, tooling suppliers, and internal toolroom and operations.
This role is responsible for understanding customer requirements, translating them into manufacturable solutions, and providing technical leadership throughout product development, tooling, validation, launch, and release to production.
The Manufacturing Technical Lead provides leadership in DFM, tooling development, process readiness, and problem resolution, while proactively identifying risks, coordinating with cross‑functional teams, and ensuring successful execution from concept through full production.
Position Accountabilities   Serve as OMC’s technical lead for customer projects, engineering changes, and product/tooling modifications.
Act as the primary technical contact for customers, ensuring product, tooling, manufacturability, and quality requirements are clearly understood and successfully executed.
Lead technical problem‑solving related to product design, process capability, tooling performance, and manufacturing challenges.
Lead the successful development, validation, launch, and sustained manufacturing of recent and existing products.
Develop, manage, and clearly communicate technical project timelines, risks, and deliverables to ensure alignment with customer deadlines.
Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, technical documentation, and manufacturing standards.
Drive cross‑functional alignment between engineering, quality, toolroom, and operations to ensure successful project execution.
What you will be doing   Lead technical discussions with customers to fully understand product requirements, specifications, quality expectations, and design intent.
Review customer part drawings, Computer‑Aided Design models, specifications, and quality requirements.
Use CAD software to evaluate part geometry, tooling concepts, and manufacturability risks.
Provide technical recommendations related to tooling design, material selection, manufacturability, process optimization, and production readiness.
Provide regular project status updates to internal and external stakeholders through reports, presentations, and technical reviews.
Work directly with onsite and overseas tooling suppliers to develop tooling designs, Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews, and customer approval packages.
Oversee tooling build activities following customer approval through tool completion and production readiness.
Maintain technical ownership and revision control of part files, tooling files, CAD models, engineering drawings, and related technical documentation.
Lead technical activities related to:
DFM reviews
Tooling modifications and renewals
First Article submissions
Engineering changes
Product and tooling release to production
Product and tooling obsolescence and end‑of‑life planning
Support engineering changes, design revisions, validation activities, and production readiness reviews.
Plan, schedule, and oversee tooling trials, sample runs, and Installation Qualification (IQ) activities to validate tooling and ensure successful production launch.
Provide technical guidance and support to production, quality, maintenance, and process teams.
Participate in customer meetings, audits, technical reviews, and formal presentations.
Maintain engineering documentation, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and ERP system accuracy.
Track technical activities against customer timelines, proactively identifying risks, delays, and mitigation actions.
Work closely with tooling, quality, production, maintenance, suppliers, and other cross‑functional stakeholders to ensure project success.
Prioritize technical objectives, workload, and deliverables for engineering team members.
Qualifications  Education  Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent engineering or technical discipline.
Experience   Minimum 3 years of technical engineering experience within manufacturing.
Minimum 3 years of customer‑facing technical experience preferred.
Experience in injection moulding, tooling, or plastics manufacturing strongly preferred.
Technical Skills   Autodesk Fusion 360, Creo, Solid Works or other CAD software
GD&T interpretation
DFM / PPAP / PFMEA / Control Plans
Injection moulding processes
Fixture and tooling design
ERP systems / BOM management
