Bus Aide

Required Skills

Educational Level: Preferred but NOT required High School Diploma or HSE.

Proficiency

Skills:

Written and oral communication skills, ability to deal with multiple tasks, and interpersonal skills.

Personal

Skills:

Pleasant personality, cooperative attitude, physical skills and stamina to perform essential duties.

Must be able to sit, stand, walk and/or bend for extended periods of time throughout the day; lifting up to 40 pounds.

Effective communicator; verbal, written, and interactions with bus drivers, parents, students, and Transportation staff.

Punctual and good attendance.

Present on the bus from the time the first student is picked up in the morning and in the afternoon until the last student is dropped off.

Monitor will sit in a designated spot so that all children can be monitored and given maximum supervision.

Be alert at all times to the needs of the students and to interact when necessary.

Utilize the lift and tie down systems for the students in wheelchairs and mobility devices. When the bus driver and bus monitor loads a student the other should always double-check all straps, belts, harnesses, and wheelchair tie downs.

Be familiar with the emergency evacuation plan and be prepared to evacuate the bus in the event of an emergency.

Understand training needed in the transport of medically fragile students.

Monitor shall be knowledgeable of the route.

The bus monitor must respect the confidentiality of students. Any information that is acquired in the course of job responsibilities related to the children or to an incident on the bus should be kept confidential; it should not be discussed with co-workers who do not have a need to know.

Maintaining the cleanliness of the inside of the school bus.

Insuring all equipment that is not being used is placed in a proper storage area.

Maintain a good working relationship with the bus driver based on respect and mutual understanding.
