Principal Engineer - Product Safety

Glasgow, Bristol or Crewe (Hybrid - minimum 2 days onsite)

Up to 68,500 (DOE)

We are looking for a Principal Engineer - Product Safety to play a critical role in ensuring the safety of complex, safety‑critical engineering systems. You will lead on hazard identification, risk analysis and safety case development
, working closely with Technical Authorities to ensure that products meet stringent safety requirements across the full engineering lifecycle. This is a key position where you'll act as both a technical specialist and a thought leader
, influencing design decisions and ensuring risks are reduced as low as reasonably practicable.

• Lead hazard identification, risk assessment and mitigation activities
• Develop and maintain hazard logs and safety case arguments
• Conduct and facilitate HAZID workshops and safety reviews
• Support Technical Authorities in ensuring safe design solutions
• Assess product safety across complex subsystems and technologies
• Review and verify quality and completeness of safety submissions
• Lead on product safety activities within assigned equipment areas
• Support and guide junior engineers where required

• Strong knowledge of product safety management processes
• Experience across multiple phases of the engineering lifecycle (LCM)
• Understanding of through‑life engineering and design integration
• Familiarity with key safety standards, including:
  • DSA‑02
  • JSP 430
  • Def Stan 00‑56
  • MIL‑STD‑882E
  • BS EN 61508
• Ability to produce high‑quality technical documentation
• Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills

You’ll join a collaborative Product Safety team working across large‑scale, complex engineering programmes
. You may be supporting a major platform programme or working across multiple smaller projects, gaining exposure to a wide range of technologies and engineering disciplines. You will play a key part in supporting Technical Authorities
, helping shape safety strategies and ensuring robust safety arguments are developed and evidenced throughout the lifecycle.
