Design safety assurance engineer – Scottish Power
SummaryThe Design Safety Assurance Engineer is a specialist Senior-level member of the Engineering Assurance sub-function within the Engineering Management Team (EMT). The role provides independent, structured assurance that CDM obligations are correctly understood, embedded in design activities, and effectively implemented across all Work Packages and Designers throughout the project lifecycle.

- Support the Engineering Assurance Manager in assuring the projects Principal Designer duties under CDM 2015, providing assurance that Package Principal Designer Representatives effectively discharge their responsibilities, including oversight of design organisations and application of the hierarchy of control.
- Monitor design development across all Work Packages to confirm that CDM principles, offshore hazards, and constructability considerations are embedded throughout design progression, and that design hazards, residual risks, assumptions, and limitations are identified, recorded, and communicated appropriately.
- Support the development, implementation, and assurance of CDM governance arrangements - including Design Safety Plans, Design Risk Registers, and Design Management Plans - and contribute to guidance materials and briefing resources for the project team.
- Contribute to the Design Justification - the principal deliverable of the Engineering Assurance sub-function - providing evidence that health and safety requirements are addressed in design, and report on design safety assurance status to the Engineering Assurance Manager.
- Undertake assurance reviews, audits, and targeted sampling of CDM activities across Work Packages, and contribute to continuous improvement of design safety assurance processes.
- Bachelors degree in Engineering (any relevant discipline)
- Minimum 6 years post-graduate engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a CDM, design safety, or health and safety advisory role on UK construction or infrastructure projects.
- Sound knowledge of CDM 2015 Regulations, including Principal Designer duties, pre construction information requirements, and the hierarchy of control applied to complex engineering projects.
- Demonstrated ability to provide independent assurance on CDM implementation, including monitoring, auditing, and reporting on CDM compliance across multiple Designers and Work Packages.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to engage credibly with Designers, Work Package teams, and the Engineering Assurance Manager on CDM matters.
