Job Description
- The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for performing high complexity laboratory testing, analyzing specimens, and ensuring accurate and timely reporting of patient results.
- This role requires strict adherence to regulatory guidelines, quality control standards, and laboratory procedures.
- The ideal candidate will maintain compliance with CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and other regulatory standards while ensuring the highest level of patient confidentiality and laboratory excellence.
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance.
- Ensure proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens and maintain proper documentation.
- Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures in accordance with department standard operating procedures.
- Review and release accurate test results.
- Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety guidelines.
- Follow quality control policies and document all quality control activities, calibrations, and maintenance performed.
- Follow established policies when test systems are outside acceptable performance levels.
- Identify and correct problems affecting test performance or immediately notify senior technologists or supervisors.
- Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
- Report STAT or critical results according to department procedures.
- Respond to questions from customers or laboratory personnel as needed.
- Maintain complete records of all on-site testing performed.
- Maintain the general appearance and organization of the department.
- Ensure reagents and test kits are properly labeled with received, opened, and expiration dates.
- Review and train on new procedures as required.
- Attend monthly department meetings and additional training sessions.
- Participate in safety training and understand the location and use of safety manuals and equipment.
- Participate in regulatory or government inspections if required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Solid understanding of basic laboratory testing and high complexity testing procedures.
- Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance processes across laboratory departments.
- Strong computer skills with the ability to work in multiple laboratory information systems.
- Ability to establish work priorities and handle multiple procedures simultaneously.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times.
- National and state licensure as required.
- Minimum of 1 year of clinical laboratory experience in high complexity testing preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year of clinical laboratory experience required for candidates with a BS or BA in Chemistry or Biology.
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Biology, or Associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology accepted.
- Previously qualified as a Technologist under applicable federal regulations accepted.
- Foreign educated candidates must provide credential evaluation from International Education Research Foundation.
- United States educated candidates must provide original academic transcripts.
- National certification as MT or MLT from a recognized organization such as ASCP or AMT preferred or eligibility required.
