Core Responsibilities
  • Medication Administration: Medication technicians prepare and administer prescribed medications, including oral, topical, and some injectable forms, following the "five rights" of medication administration: right patient, right medication, right dose, right route, and right time. They may also assist patients with self‑administration when appropriate.

  • Documentation: Accurate record‑keeping is essential. Medication technicians document all administered medications, dosages, timing, and any patient responses or side effects in official medical records.
  • Collaboration with Healthcare Professionals: They work closely with nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare staff to verify medication orders, manage inventory, and ensure patient safety. Open communication is critical for effective patient care.
  • Medication Management: Technicians maintain proper storage, organization, and inventory of medications, coordinating with pharmacies for refills and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. Special attention is required for controlled substances and narcotics, following legal and facility regulations.
  • Patient Education and Support: They provide guidance to patients and families about medications, including potential side effects and adherence to prescribed regimens, while offering emotional support and encouragement.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Medication technicians must adhere to state and federal laws, facility policies, and safety protocols, ensuring all medication administration is legally compliant.
Additional Duties
  • Assisting with general patient care if certified as a CNA or similar role.
  • Participating in quality assurance initiatives to improve medication management practices.
  • Reporting any medication errors or discrepancies promptly to supervisors.
