Job DescriptionAt the Cardinal Cushing Centers, we support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, providing possibilities and opportunities for growth and advancement. Our programs for students, adults and community members include education, employment training, transition services, residential care, therapeutic and recreational services.
Various hours/shifts available. Per diem hours are also available.
SummaryThe RN provides nursing care to sick students, assesses student complaints, administers medications as ordered and handles specific responsibilities assigned. Provides support to parents and staff, taking all concerns seriously and responding appropriately.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Maintains current licensure
- Dispenses medications as necessary
- Provides nursing care to students in the Health Center as dictated by the situation
- Maintains accurate notes and provides precise reports
- Assumes responsibility for portions of the medication procedure:
- Updating prescriptions from doctors every six months and medication orders annually
- Keeping medication sheets up to date
- Implementing new MD orders and changes as needed
- Knowledge and understanding of the side effects of all medications dispensed
- Keeping accurate records and scheduling lab tests on individual students according to medical protocol and as ordered by physicians
- Providing staff with pertinent information on health-related issues
- Orients and trains Residential Life Skills instructors, educational, and vocational staff to the medication procedures per DPH guidelines
- Notifies Director of Health Services or covering supervisor of any emergency medical situations as they occur and follows the protocol for emergency care on or off campus
- Implements and monitors diet programs for those students necessitating weight control
- Provides emergency first aid for students and personnel
- Assumes responsibilities of the Director in his/her absence
- May have specific responsibilities assigned such as medications, keeping current the prescriptions, monitoring charts, and follow up on medications returned after school vacations, etc.
- Documents accurately and completely on the following, but not limited to: clinic log, nurses notes, communications log, phone log
- Replenishes first aid boxes as necessary
- Helps verify medication sheet monthly
- Logs medication received from pharmacy in appropriate file
- Logs in and counts medications received from students’ families in appropriate file
- Attends department meetings
- Keeps work area clean, stocked, and safe
- Participates in the daily count of controlled substance with the incoming nurse
- Monitors and charts BP, P, and weights monthly
- Participates in monthly orientation
- Tracks completion of annual physical exams as required by EEC
- Tracks immunizations to ensure they are kept up to date
- Checks and recounts all medications packed for a home visit
- Prepares medical summaries for IEP and updates as needed
- Regular attendance and prompt reporting to work at the beginning of the scheduled shift are essential functions of this position

- Completes other assignments as deemed appropriate by the Director/covering supervisor
- Checks and prepares all medication for administration
- Orders student’s medications as needed through pharmacy
- Notifies parents in writing/email when student’s medication supply is low or due to be filled
- Checks that inhalers, epi-pens, diastats and PRN medications have not expired
- Ensures correct labels on medication bottles
- Packs for field trips and home visits
Full-time
Salary$30 to $37 Per Hour
Job Requirements- Formal Education
- Graduate of NLN approved school of nursing
- Current RN license, will also consider LPN with experience
- A valid driver’s license
- Completion of Orientation and required training
- Certification:
Receive initial certification and re‑certification as appropriate in the following: - CPR
- Safety Care
- Skills / Abilities / Competencies
- Good nursing and assessment skills
- Ability to work flexible hours
- Ability to respond to emergency situations, utilizing common sense above all
- Must be able to relate well with students, parents, staff, doctors, etc.
