Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC), Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), located on the island of Maui, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
Monthly Salary: $3,788/Mon.
Duties- Coordinates, performs, and documents maintenance and repairs for project grounds, baseyards, and office/headquarters.
- Improves facility structures.
- Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs equipment.
- Designs and fabricates parts and equipment as needed.
- Conducts safety inspections at project facilities and makes recommendations for improvement.
- Occasionally works in the field for eradication and control of invasive alien plant and animal species.
- Controls alien species using mechanical or chemical means as appropriate.
- Assists with coordination and management of helicopter operations.
- Coordinates maintenance and repairs for all project vehicles.
- Drives to transport project vehicles.
- Trains staff in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Education

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. - Experience
:
Three to five (3-5) years in a natural resource or related agricultural/landscape field with oversight responsibility for maintaining and using small and heavy equipment and a vehicle fleet. - Knowledge
:
Knowledge of Hawaiian biota and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions; field activities relating to agricultural or natural resource management; field safety and procedures and principles relevant to analyzing and resolving technical/mechanical problems; occupational health and safety standards related to project operations. - Abilities & Skills
:
Basic communication skills, problem solving skills, ability to work independently; read maps and document work; prioritize competing demands for equipment maintenance and repairs in a fast‑paced environment while keeping safety considerations foremost; work with, repair, and troubleshoot small mechanized equipment such as chainsaws, weed eaters, agricultural sprayers, tractors, forklifts, mowers, and pressure washers; complete Non‑Journey‑Worker level carpentry, grounds/building maintenance, and welding work;
design and fabricate parts and equipment as needed; train others on proper operation and maintenance of mechanized equipment; valid driver’s license and personal driver’s insurance;
Certification in First Aid/CPR; complete pesticide safety course; complete Hazard Communication training; chainsaw training; forklift operator certification; basic helicopter safety course (A100). - Physical/Medical Demands
:
Excellent coordination skills and manual dexterity; ability to lift and carry at least fifty (50) pounds.
- Experience using handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) units for data collection.
- Familiarity with computers and data entry.
- Field experience in resource management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or elsewhere, especially control of alien invasive species.
